The shareholder meeting began at nine o’clock.
Federal agents occupied offices throughout Whitmore Development Group.
The board gathered in the main auditorium.
Vanessa entered through a private elevator wearing a plain black suit and a tracking bracelet.
Whispers spread when she appeared.
Daniel stood at the podium.
Eleanor sat in the front row.
Gregory monitored the emergency system from a secure control room.
At 9:37, a fire alarm activated on the twenty-third floor.
Employees began evacuating.
The auditorium doors locked automatically.
The hidden transfer sequence started.
Gregory tried to stop it.
Someone inside the control room struck him from behind.
The video feed disappeared.
Mark rushed upstairs with federal agents.
Daniel continued speaking to keep the shareholders calm.
Eleanor watched the board.
One person did not appear surprised.
Margaret Kane, Walter’s younger sister, sat near the aisle.
She had served as the company’s general counsel for twenty years.
She drafted Daniel’s engagement sponsorship forms.
She controlled the document archives.
She had also certified the altered trust agreement.
Eleanor stood.
“Margaret.”
Margaret reached into her handbag.
Vanessa moved first.
She knocked the bag from Margaret’s hand.
A small remote device slid across the floor.
Margaret struck Vanessa and ran toward the emergency exit.
Federal agents entered before she reached it.
Upstairs, Mark found Gregory unconscious.
A company technician had attempted to complete the transfer manually.
He surrendered when agents surrounded him.
The emergency system was shut down with fourteen seconds remaining.
Seventy-two million dollars remained in the company account.
Margaret was arrested.
She admitted helping Walter after Richard discovered the original fraud.
She had altered maintenance records after the plane crash.
She had replaced Daniel’s signed charity page inside the trust agreement.
She had ordered Gregory’s car explosion when he began cooperating.
Daniel listened without interrupting.
The betrayal no longer came from one woman.
It came from an entire structure built around his family.
Walter had used loyalty as camouflage.
Vanessa stood several feet away, holding her bleeding lip.
Daniel approached her.
“You saved the company.”
Vanessa looked at the floor.
“I helped put it in danger.”
“Both things are true.”
She lifted her eyes.
“I am sorry about your mother.”
Daniel’s expression became cold.
“My mother is not the only person you owe.”
