Chapter 5 - THE FAILED TRANSFER

Daniel took out his phone.
He had silenced it during an investor meeting.
There were nine missed calls from the company’s chief financial officer.
He returned the call immediately.
The explanation came quickly.
At 10:42 that morning, someone used Daniel’s credentials to approve a payment to a consulting firm called Northstar Meridian.
The system rejected the transaction because the security device generated an incomplete code.
The request had originated from Daniel’s home network.
Vanessa denied knowing anything about it.
Mark opened a laptop on the dining-room table.
“The request was made at 10:39.”
Eleanor remembered the exact moment.
Vanessa had ordered her to clean the upstairs guest rooms.
She remained alone in Daniel’s office for twenty minutes.
At 10:41, she came downstairs carrying the bucket.
When Eleanor asked whether she should clean the office, Vanessa became furious.
Minutes later, the dirty water covered Eleanor’s uniform.
The humiliation had been a distraction.
Police officers entered the mansion.
A detective named Laura Bennett introduced herself.
She asked Vanessa to hand over her phone.
Vanessa refused.
“You need a warrant.”
Detective Bennett nodded.
“We are obtaining one.”
Vanessa looked at Daniel.
“Are you really going to let them treat me like a criminal?”
Daniel’s eyes remained on the television.
The frozen image showed Vanessa photographing his trust agreement.
“I don’t know who you are.”
“I am the woman you love.”
“My mother stood in this house for six days.”
“You treated her like she was less than human.”
Vanessa pointed at Eleanor.
“She lied to me.”
Daniel’s voice became quieter.
“And you showed her the truth.”
Vanessa turned toward the door.
Mark stepped aside.
Two officers followed her outside.
She was not yet under arrest.
But her car remained part of the investigation.
She left the property on foot.
Before reaching the gate, she turned back.
Her eyes fixed on Eleanor.
“You think you saved him.”
Eleanor did not respond.
Vanessa smiled without warmth.
“You have no idea what Daniel already signed.”
Then she disappeared beyond the stone wall.
Daniel looked toward his mother.
“What was she talking about?”
Eleanor picked up the trust agreement from the table.
The final page had been replaced.

At the bottom was Daniel’s genuine signature.
Above it, a new clause transferred control of several Whitmore properties to a company he had never heard of.
