Chapter 3 - THE FIRST RECORDING

The television showed Vanessa standing in Daniel’s private office three nights earlier.

She was speaking on the phone while Eleanor dusted the hallway outside.

“I’m almost there,” Vanessa said.

“He trusts me completely.”

A man’s voice answered through the speaker.

“What about the mother?”

“She suspects something.”

“Then move faster.”

Vanessa lowered her voice.

“Daniel will sign the estate documents after the engagement dinner.”

The recording paused.

Daniel turned toward her.

“What estate documents?”

Vanessa’s mouth opened, but no words came out.

Eleanor clicked the remote.

A second video began.

Vanessa sat at Daniel’s desk with a folder open in front of her.

She photographed several pages with her phone.

One page displayed the Whitmore Family Holdings logo.

Another contained Daniel’s signature.

Daniel stepped closer to the screen.

“That was my confidential trust agreement.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“I was planning a surprise for you.”

“With my trust documents?”

“I wanted to understand our future.”

Eleanor’s expression did not change.

“The man on the phone called you Vanessa Cole.”

“That is my name.”

“He also called you Vanessa Mercer.”

Daniel looked at her sharply.

Vanessa’s voice became defensive.

“Mercer was my former married name.”

“You told me you had never been married.”

“I was young.”

“You said your only serious relationship ended in college.”

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears again.

“I was afraid you would judge me.”

Eleanor pressed another button.

A photograph appeared.

Vanessa stood beside a dark-haired man outside a courthouse.

The date was only eleven months earlier.

The caption identified them as Mr. and Mrs. Adrian Mercer.

Daniel stared at the image.

“You told me you had been single for three years.”

“We separated long before that photograph.”

The front door opened.

Mark entered with Rosa, Marcus, and Helen behind him.

Vanessa took a step backward.

Eleanor gestured toward the three former employees.

“These people are not here for revenge.”

“They are here because your behavior became part of something larger.”

Rosa held a folder against her chest.

Marcus carried a small envelope.

Helen’s hands trembled.

Daniel looked at them.

“What did she do?”

May you like

Rosa answered first.

“She made us leave because we saw things she could not afford for you to discover.”
