Chapter 19 - THE TRIAL OF TWO FAMILIES
The trials lasted eleven months.
Walter Kane was charged with conspiracy, attempted theft, kidnapping, evidence destruction, and Richard Whitmore’s murder.
Margaret faced charges for fraud, obstruction, and her role in covering up the plane sabotage.
Adrian pleaded guilty and testified against them.
Gregory received limited immunity for his cooperation but resigned from the company.
He apologized to Daniel publicly.
Daniel accepted the apology without restoring the friendship.
Some betrayals could be understood without being repaired.
Vanessa pleaded guilty to fraud, unlawful surveillance, evidence tampering, and conspiracy.
Her cooperation reduced her sentence.
It did not erase it.
During sentencing, Rosa spoke first.
She described the humiliation of being accused of theft after fourteen years of honest work.
Marcus described fearing that one false accusation could destroy his career.
Helen described crying in her car after being told poor people should be grateful for any treatment they received.
Then Eleanor approached the microphone.
Vanessa looked at her from the defense table.
“The day you poured dirty water over me, you believed you were humiliating a powerless woman,” Eleanor said.
“You did not know my name.”
“You did not know my wealth.”
“You did not know my relationship to Daniel.”
“That ignorance did not create your cruelty.”
“It revealed it.”
The courtroom remained silent.
Eleanor continued.
“A person’s character is not measured by how they behave in front of someone who can reward them.”
“It is measured by how they behave toward someone they believe cannot fight back.”
Vanessa lowered her head.
The judge sentenced her to several years in federal prison, followed by supervised release and restitution.
Walter received life in prison.
Margaret received twenty-eight years.
After the hearing, Daniel stood beside his mother on the courthouse steps.
Reporters shouted questions.
He ignored them.
“I should have seen it,” he said.
“You saw what she designed you to see.”
“I also dismissed your concerns.”
Eleanor turned toward him.
“You wanted independence.”
“I treated that as rejection.”
Daniel’s eyes filled.
“I am sorry.”
