Chapter 14 - THE PRICE OF OBEDIENCE

Daniel wanted to leave immediately.

Detective Bennett stopped him.

“Walking into that warehouse gives Walter two hostages instead of one.”

“She may be part of this.”

“She may also be in immediate danger.”

Eleanor watched Vanessa struggle against Adrian.

Compassion did not erase accountability.

But accountability did not require indifference to someone’s life.

Eleanor stepped in front of the camera.

Walter’s expression changed when he saw her.

“You,” he said.

“Yes, Walter.”

“You turned Richard against me.”

“Richard discovered you were stealing.”

“He was going to destroy everything I built.”

“You destroyed it yourself.”

Walter moved closer to the camera.

“Do you know what it was like watching him receive credit for my work?”

“You had a title, wealth, and trust.”

“I wanted control.”

“And you killed for it.”

Vanessa looked toward Eleanor.

For the first time, shame replaced arrogance.

“Mrs. Whitmore,” she whispered.

Adrian tightened his grip.

“Do not speak to her.”

Eleanor kept Walter engaged while Mark traced the video signal.

The broadcast moved through several encrypted servers.

But a sound in the background provided a clue.

A freight train passed every eleven minutes.

Marcus remembered tracks behind the Baltimore warehouse.

Federal agents surrounded the area quietly.

Daniel continued speaking to Vanessa.

“Why did you pour water on my mother?”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Because she looked at me like she could see everything.”

“She could.”

“I knew the transfer failed.”

“I thought she had discovered the office.”

“So you humiliated her.”

“I wanted her to leave.”

Eleanor understood.

The cruelty was real.

But the timing had also been tactical.

Vanessa used abuse to drive away witnesses.

That did not make it less cruel.

It made it more deliberate.

Walter demanded the trust agreement.

Daniel lifted the folder.

“It is here.”

“And the device?”

Daniel held it toward the camera.

Walter smiled.

“Come alone.”

Daniel tore the trust agreement in half.

Walter’s face twisted.

The document was only a copy.

But Walter did not know that.

He grabbed a container of fuel and poured it across Richard’s desk.

Vanessa screamed.

The false compartment beneath the drawer began to open.

May you like

Inside it was a red leather ledger.

Walter had finally found what he needed.
