CHAPTER 9 — The Brother Who Wanted Everything

The first time Daniel saw Alexander Whitmore in person, he expected anger.
Hatred.
A man who had spent his entire life waiting for revenge should have looked like a monster.
But Alexander didn't.
He looked calm.
Almost peaceful.
And somehow, that made him more dangerous.
The meeting happened in the old Whitmore vineyard.
The same place where Jonathan Whitmore had built his first business empire.
The same place where Daniel had spent his childhood summers with his father.
Now it felt like enemy territory.
Alexander stood between the rows of vines, wearing a dark coat.
He didn't turn around when Daniel approached.
"You came alone."
Daniel stopped several feet away.
"I wanted answers."
Alexander smiled.
"That's the difference between us."
"What?"
"You spent your life receiving answers."
"I spent mine searching for them."
Daniel studied him.
"You are my brother."
Alexander finally turned.
For a moment, there was something emotional in his eyes.
Something almost human.
Then it disappeared.
"Yes."
"I'm your brother."
"But you never knew I existed."
Daniel's voice became quieter.
"Because they hid you."
Alexander laughed.
"They hid me because I was inconvenient."
The wind moved through the vineyard.
Daniel felt a strange sadness.
Because no matter what Alexander had done...
he was still family.
"What happened to you?"
Alexander looked away.
"After my mother died, I was sent away."
"Your grandfather paid people to keep me quiet."
"He told everyone I was a mistake."
Daniel clenched his fists.
"My father allowed that?"
Alexander looked at him.
"Your father allowed many things."
The words hurt.
Because Daniel was beginning to realize something.
His father wasn't innocent.
He was just better at hiding his mistakes.
"You ruined my wedding."
Daniel's voice hardened.
Alexander smiled.
"No."
"I revealed your family."
"You attacked innocent people."
Alexander stepped closer.
"Did I?"
He pulled out his phone.
A video appeared.
Daniel watched.
It showed his grandfather.
Twenty-eight years earlier.
Speaking to someone in an office.
The audio was clear.
"Claire cannot remain connected to this family."
Daniel's face changed.
Then another voice appeared.
His father.
Jonathan.
"What if she tells the truth?"
His grandfather answered:
"Then we make sure nobody believes her."
Daniel stopped breathing.
The video ended.
Alexander looked at him.
"Your perfect family was never perfect."
Daniel looked away.
"Where did you get this?"
"From the same place they buried everything else."
"Your grandfather's private files."
Daniel shook his head.
"Why show me this?"
Alexander's expression became cold.
"Because I don't want you to hate me."
"I want you to understand me."
Back at the mansion, Margaret finally told the truth.
Everyone gathered in the living room.
For the first time in twenty-eight years, she stopped protecting the Whitmore name.
"I knew about Alexander."
Daniel looked at her.
His heart sank.
"Of course you did."
Margaret closed her eyes.
"When your father brought him to me..."
Everyone froze.
"Your father brought him here?"
"Yes."
"When?"
"Before you were born."
Daniel stared.
"Then why did he disappear?"
Margaret's voice broke.
"Because your grandfather forced Jonathan to choose."
"Between his reputation..."
"And his child."
Rebecca looked furious.
"And he chose the family name."
Margaret nodded.
"Yes."
The room became silent.
Daniel sat down.
Everything he believed about his father was collapsing.
Then Margaret said something that shocked everyone.
"But Alexander wasn't the only child."
Daniel looked up.
"What?"
Margaret hesitated.
"There was another."
Everyone froze.
Emily whispered:
"Another?"
Margaret nodded.
"Jonathan had three children before he died."
Daniel felt sick.
"Who?"
Margaret looked toward the window.
"One of them..."
"Is standing in this room."
Nobody moved.
Everyone looked around.
Confusion spread.
Then Olivia suddenly stepped backward.
Her face turned pale.
"Mom..."
Margaret looked at her daughter.
And Daniel realized something.
Olivia knew.
"Wait."
Daniel stood.
"Olivia?"
His sister looked terrified.
"I didn't know how to tell you."
Daniel stared.
"Tell me what?"
She started crying.
"My whole life..."
"I thought I was protecting you."
"Protecting me from what?"
Olivia whispered:
"From the truth about our father."
The room went silent.
"What truth?"
Olivia looked at Daniel.
"I'm not Jonathan's biological daughter."
The words destroyed the last piece of certainty Daniel had.
"No."
"It's true."
Margaret stepped forward.
"Olivia..."
But Olivia continued.
"I found out five years ago."
"Father wasn't my real father."
Daniel looked at Margaret.
"Mom?"
Margaret couldn't deny it.
"I was going to tell you."
"When?"
Margaret had no answer.
That night, Daniel walked through the empty mansion.
Everyone he loved had hidden something.
His mother.
His father.
His sister.
Even Emily.
The entire family was built on secrets.
Then he received a message.
From Alexander.
"You want the final truth?"
A second message arrived.
A photo.
Daniel stared at it.
It showed a woman.
A woman he had never met.
But the caption underneath made his blood run cold.
"Your real mother."
Daniel's hands shook.
Because the woman in the photo wasn't Margaret.
It was someone else.
Someone alive.
Someone who had been watching him for years.
Then Alexander sent one final message.
"Tomorrow, you will learn why your father really chose you."
Daniel looked out into the darkness.
For the first time in his life...
he wondered if he had ever truly belonged to the Whitmore family.
Meanwhile, inside a hidden apartment across the city...
A woman watched Daniel's reaction through a screen.
She touched the photograph beside her.
A photograph of a young Daniel as a baby.
She whispered:
"I'm sorry, my son."
Then she looked at another picture.
A picture of Margaret.
May you like
Her expression changed.
"But she has to pay for what she did."
