CHAPTER 4 — The Secret Behind Claire’s Disappearance

The rain started before sunrise.
It poured over the Whitmore mansion like the sky itself was mourning.
Daniel had barely slept.
The letter from Emily was still sitting on his desk.
The photograph of Claire was beside it.
A woman he had never heard of.
A woman who seemed to be connected to a secret his family had buried for nearly three decades.
He kept asking himself the same question.
Why had everyone lied to him?
His father had always been his hero.
A respected businessman.
A loving father.
A man who taught him that a person's name was the most valuable thing they owned.
But now Daniel wondered...
What was his father's name worth if it was built on a hidden truth?
A soft knock came from the door.
"Daniel?"
He turned.
His younger sister, Olivia, stood there.
She looked exhausted.
"You haven't slept."
"Neither have you."
Olivia walked inside.
She noticed the photograph.
Her face immediately changed.
"Where did you get that?"
Daniel looked at her carefully.
"You know her?"
Olivia became silent.
That silence told him everything.
"Olivia."
She looked away.
"Daniel, please."
"No."
His voice became firmer.
"Not anymore."
He picked up the photograph.
"Everyone keeps asking me to trust them. But nobody tells me the truth."
Olivia swallowed.
"Claire was real."
Daniel felt a chill.
"Who was she?"
Olivia slowly sat down.
"She was the reason our family almost collapsed."
"Why?"
She hesitated.
"Because Dad loved her."
Daniel stared.
"My father was married to Mom."
"Not at first."
The words hit him.
"What?"
Olivia sighed.
"Before Dad married Mom, he was engaged to Claire."
Daniel felt like the room moved.
"Then why did he marry Mom?"
Olivia didn't answer immediately.
Because the answer was ugly.
"Because Claire disappeared."
"Disappeared?"
"One day she was there."
"Then she was gone."
Daniel looked at the photo again.
"Did Dad know?"
Olivia looked down.
"Everyone knew."
His chest tightened.
"Everyone except me."
A long silence followed.
Then Daniel asked the question that had been haunting him.
"What happened to her?"
Olivia whispered:
"She was pregnant."
Daniel froze.
"What?"
"Claire was carrying Dad's child."
The photograph slipped slightly in his hand.
For several seconds, he couldn't speak.
A child.
A secret child.
A missing woman.
A family mystery.
Everything suddenly felt connected.
Then his phone rang.
Unknown number.
Again.
Daniel answered.
"Who is this?"
A woman's voice responded.
A voice filled with anger.
"Daniel Whitmore?"
"Yes."
"You need to stop protecting your mother."
Daniel stood.
"Who are you?"
The woman took a breath.
"My name is Rebecca Lane."
The name meant nothing to him.
Until she said the next words.
"I am Claire's daughter."
Daniel's heart stopped.
"That's impossible."
"No."
Her voice trembled.
"It's the truth."
He looked at the photograph.
The woman in the picture suddenly felt closer.
"Where are you?"
Rebecca was silent for a moment.
"Somewhere your family can't control me."
Daniel tightened his grip on the phone.
"What do you want?"
The answer came quickly.
"The truth."
Meanwhile, across town...
Emily sat inside a small café.
She watched the news coverage of the canceled wedding.
The reporter repeated the same story.
"The bride who publicly humiliated the groom's elderly mother..."
Emily turned off the television.
A man sitting across from her smiled.
"You look upset."
Emily looked at him coldly.
"You promised me this wouldn't happen."
The man calmly stirred his coffee.
"Plans change."
"You said Margaret would confess."
"She almost did."
Emily leaned closer.
"You knew about Claire before I did."
The man's smile disappeared.
"Careful."
Emily stared at him.
"Who are you really?"
The man placed a folder on the table.
Inside were documents.
Old documents.
Birth records.
Medical files.
Photographs.
Emily opened the folder.
Her face slowly lost color.
"No..."
The man watched her reaction.
"Now you understand."
Emily looked up.
"Daniel cannot know this."
The man smiled.
"Why?"
"Because if Daniel discovers the truth..."
He leaned closer.
"The Whitmore family won't just lose a wedding."
"They will lose everything."
That evening, Daniel returned home.
He found his mother sitting alone in the living room.
The woman who had always seemed unbreakable looked smaller than ever.
"Mom."
Margaret looked up.
"I know."
Daniel stopped.
"You know what?"
"Rebecca contacted you."
His blood ran cold.
"You know her name?"
Margaret closed her eyes.
"I was hoping this day would never come."
Daniel stared at her.
"Who is Rebecca Lane?"
Margaret's eyes filled with tears.
"Your father's daughter."
The room went silent.
Daniel felt betrayed.
"You knew?"
"Yes."
"For how long?"
Margaret looked down.
"Twenty-eight years."
Daniel stepped back.
All his life...
his mother had been his safest place.
And now she was the person holding the biggest secret.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Margaret whispered:
"Because your father begged me."
Daniel shook his head.
"No."
"He was afraid."
"Afraid of what?"
Margaret looked toward the window.
At the storm outside.
"He was afraid Rebecca would come back..."
"Because she knew what happened to her mother."
Daniel's expression changed.
"What happened to Claire?"
Margaret didn't answer.
And that frightened him more than anything.
Finally, she whispered:
"Claire wasn't the one who disappeared."
Daniel frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Margaret looked directly at him.
"It means..."
"Someone made her disappear."
A cold silence filled the room.
Daniel realized something terrifying.
The wedding wasn't destroyed because of Emily.
It wasn't destroyed because of a fight.
It was destroyed because someone had been waiting twenty-eight years...
for the Whitmore family's secret to finally come out.
May you like
And now that the truth had started to surface...
someone was willing to do anything to bury it again.
