CHAPTER 5 — The Daughter Who Came Back for Revenge

The name Rebecca Lane haunted Daniel all night.

He couldn't sleep.

Every time he closed his eyes, he saw the photograph of Claire.

A woman his father loved.

A woman his mother knew.

A woman who vanished before Daniel was old enough to understand anything about the world.

And now, after twenty-eight years, her daughter had returned.

Not asking for money.

Not asking for forgiveness.

Asking for the truth.

Daniel stood in front of his father's old bookshelf, running his fingers across the rows of family photographs.

There were hundreds of memories.

Birthday parties.

Christmas mornings.

Family vacations.

But one thing was missing.

Claire.

Rebecca.

The life that existed before him.

His family had carefully erased them.

"How could you do this, Dad?"

His voice was barely a whisper.

"You taught me honesty."

"But you built our family on a lie."

A sound behind him made him turn.

Margaret stood in the doorway.

She looked like she hadn't slept either.

"Daniel."

He didn't look at her.

"I met Rebecca."

Margaret froze.

"What did she say?"

"She said you knew."

His mother lowered her eyes.

"She is angry."

"She has every right to be."

Margaret looked hurt.

"Daniel..."

"No, Mom."

He turned.

"I spent my entire life believing our family was perfect."

His voice cracked.

"But now I find out my father had another daughter."

"And you knew."

Margaret took a deep breath.

"There are things you don't understand."

"Then explain them."

She stayed silent.

That silence hurt more than any answer.

Later that morning, Daniel met Rebecca at a quiet restaurant on the edge of the city.

He arrived early.

He didn't know what to expect.

A stranger.

An enemy.

A sister.

When the door opened, a woman walked in.

She was around his age.

Dark hair.

Sharp eyes.

A calm expression that hid years of pain.

Daniel immediately recognized something.

The eyes.

They were his father's eyes.

She approached the table.

"Daniel Whitmore?"

He stood.

"Rebecca?"

She nodded.

For several seconds, neither of them spoke.

They were strangers connected by blood.

Finally, Rebecca sat down.

"I never thought I would meet you."

Daniel looked at her.

"Why?"

"Because your family spent years making sure I never existed."

The words hit hard.

"My family?"

Rebecca smiled sadly.

"Don't pretend you didn't know."

"I didn't."

That surprised her.

"What?"

"I found out everything yesterday."

Rebecca studied his face.

"You really didn't know."

"No."

A strange emotion crossed her face.

Almost sadness.

"Then maybe you are different from them."

Daniel leaned forward.

"Tell me what happened."

Rebecca looked out the window.

"My mother loved your father."

"He promised he would leave everything behind."

Daniel listened carefully.

"But then something changed."

"What?"

Rebecca's fingers tightened around her coffee cup.

"Your grandfather found out."

Daniel frowned.

"My grandfather?"

"Yes."

Rebecca's voice became colder.

"He told your father that Claire was destroying the Whitmore name."

Daniel felt uncomfortable.

"What did he do?"

Rebecca looked directly at him.

"He offered Claire money to disappear."

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

"Yes."

"My father wouldn't allow that."

Rebecca laughed bitterly.

"You don't know him."

Daniel felt a painful silence.

"Did she take the money?"

"No."

Rebecca's eyes filled with anger.

"She refused."

"Then what happened?"

Rebecca looked away.

"My mother disappeared three days later."

Daniel felt a chill.

"Was she kidnapped?"

Rebecca didn't answer.

That answer was enough.

Meanwhile, Emily was sitting inside her lawyer's office.

The lawyer placed a file in front of her.

"You need to decide."

Emily looked at the documents.

"What happens if I tell Daniel?"

The lawyer sighed.

"The Whitmores will fall."

"And me?"

"You will lose everything too."

Emily stared at the file.

For months, she had planned to enter the Whitmore family.

She had a reason.

A purpose.

A promise.

But she never expected to develop real feelings for Daniel.

That was the part she hated most.

Because Daniel was not like his family.

He was innocent.

And now he was caught in the middle.

"Can I stop this?"

The lawyer looked at her.

"After what happened at the wedding?"

He shook his head.

"No."

"The truth is already moving."

That evening, Daniel returned to the mansion.

But something felt wrong.

The front door was open.

Lights were on.

"Mom?"

No answer.

He rushed inside.

The living room was empty.

Then he saw something on the table.

An old newspaper clipping.

His hands shook as he picked it up.

The headline read:

"Young Woman Missing After Confrontation With Powerful Business Family."

Below the headline was a picture.

Claire.

But underneath the article was something else.

A handwritten message.

Daniel recognized the handwriting.

His mother's.

The note said:

"I should have protected her. I failed."

Daniel's heart raced.

His mother had written this.

She knew more.

Much more.

Suddenly, his phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number.

One sentence.

"Ask your mother who pushed Claire down the stairs that night."

Daniel stared at the screen.

His breathing stopped.

Because suddenly the mystery had changed.

Claire hadn't just disappeared.

Someone had tried to kill her.

And the person responsible...

might still be inside the Whitmore family.

At the same time, Emily stood outside the Whitmore mansion.

She watched the lights through the windows.

She wanted to walk away.

She wanted to let the family destroy itself.

But she couldn't.

Because she knew something Daniel didn't.

The person manipulating everyone...

was not Rebecca.

Was not Margaret.

Was not even the Whitmore family.

It was someone closer.

Someone Daniel trusted completely.

Her phone rang.

She answered.

A familiar voice spoke.

"You need to leave Daniel."

Emily froze.

"Why?"

The voice became serious.

"Because the person who destroyed Claire's life..."

"...is planning to destroy yours next."

The call ended.

Emily looked toward the mansion.

And for the first time...

she realized she might not have entered the Whitmore family to expose a secret.

May you like

She might have entered it...

because she was the next victim.
