CHAPTER 13 — The Uncle Who Never Died

The mansion had never felt so cold.
Not because of the weather.
Not because of the darkness.
But because everyone inside finally understood one terrifying truth.
The enemy had never been outside the family.
He had been inside it.
For decades.
Daniel stared at the black screen where the man's face had appeared.
His mind refused to accept it.
The man was dead.
Everyone knew it.
There had been a funeral.
A grave.
A death certificate.
Yet somehow...
he was alive.
"Alexander."
Daniel turned toward his brother.
"Who is he?"
Alexander remained silent.
His face looked different.
For the first time since Daniel met him, the confidence was gone.
Only fear remained.
Finally, Alexander whispered:
"Victor Whitmore."
The name moved through the room.
Margaret closed her eyes.
Rebecca stepped backward.
Even Olivia looked terrified.
Daniel noticed.
Everyone knew him.
Everyone except him.
"Who is Victor?"
Margaret slowly sat down.
"Your grandfather's youngest son."
Daniel frowned.
"My uncle?"
She nodded.
"He was the person nobody talked about."
"Why?"
Margaret looked toward the window.
"Because Victor was the reason your grandfather's empire almost collapsed."
Twenty-five years earlier...
Victor Whitmore was considered the most brilliant person in the family.
Smarter than Jonathan.
More ambitious than anyone.
But he had one problem.
He believed the Whitmore name belonged to him.
Not Jonathan.
Not Daniel.
Not anyone else.
When their father chose Jonathan as the heir, Victor felt betrayed.
He believed his entire life had been stolen.
And then he made a decision.
A decision that would destroy everyone.
Daniel listened as Margaret explained.
"Victor discovered Jonathan's secrets."
"Claire."
"Rebecca."
"Sarah."
"Everything."
Daniel's expression changed.
"He used them."
Margaret nodded.
"Yes."
"He threatened Jonathan."
"He told him he would expose everything unless he gave up control of the company."
Daniel clenched his fists.
"So my father refused?"
"Yes."
"And then?"
Margaret looked at the floor.
"Then Victor disappeared."
"Everyone thought he died."
"But he didn't."
Suddenly, Emily spoke.
"My father knew about him."
Everyone turned.
Daniel looked at her.
"What?"
Emily held the recorder.
"The message from my father."
She pressed play.
Thomas Carter's voice filled the room.
"Victor Whitmore is not the victim everyone believes he is."
"He created the chaos."
"He destroyed Claire's life because she was the only person who could expose him."
The recording stopped.
Daniel looked at Margaret.
"Is that true?"
She didn't answer immediately.
Then she whispered:
"Yes."
The next morning, Daniel received another message.
This time, there was a location.
No words.
Just coordinates.
Alexander looked at the screen.
"It's him."
"Victor?"
Alexander nodded.
"He wants us to find him."
Daniel looked confused.
"Why?"
Alexander smiled bitterly.
"Because he wants to tell his version of the story."
The location was an abandoned mansion outside the city.
A place that had once belonged to the Whitmore family.
But years ago, it had been abandoned.
The group entered carefully.
Daniel.
Emily.
Alexander.
Rebecca.
Margaret stayed behind.
She was afraid.
Not for herself.
For Daniel.
Inside, they found hundreds of files.
Every secret.
Every betrayal.
Every lie.
Victor had documented everything.
Like he had been waiting for this moment.
Then a voice echoed from upstairs.
"You finally came."
Everyone looked up.
A man slowly walked down the staircase.
Older.
Gray hair.
But still carrying the same powerful presence.
Victor Whitmore.
Alive.
Daniel stared.
"You let everyone think you were dead."
Victor smiled.
"I had to disappear."
"Why?"
"Because your father tried to destroy me."
Daniel laughed bitterly.
"My father?"
"You destroyed people's lives."
Victor shook his head.
"No, Daniel."
"I exposed the weakness of this family."
He walked closer.
"You think Jonathan was a good man?"
"You think Margaret was innocent?"
"You think Sarah was just a victim?"
Daniel stared.
"What are you saying?"
Victor smiled.
"Your family told you a beautiful story."
"But the truth is much uglier."
Victor walked toward a table.
On it was an old file.
He opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
A photograph of Daniel as a baby.
But beside him...
was Victor.
Holding him.
Daniel froze.
"What is this?"
Victor looked at him.
"Something your mother never told you."
"Your father never told you."
"Even Margaret never told you."
Daniel felt a chill.
"What?"
Victor smiled.
"You were never supposed to be Jonathan's heir."
Silence.
"What does that mean?"
Victor looked at him.
"It means your grandfather had another plan."
"One that would have changed everything."
Emily noticed something.
A small detail.
The files.
The dates.
The documents.
Something was wrong.
She quietly searched through the papers.
Then she found it.
A signature.
Her face changed.
"Daniel..."
Everyone looked at her.
"What?"
She held up the document.
"This isn't Victor's handwriting."
The room froze.
Victor's expression changed.
Only for a second.
But Daniel saw it.
"You didn't create these files."
Victor remained silent.
Emily continued:
"Someone gave them to you."
"Someone has been controlling you too."
Victor's calm expression disappeared.
For the first time...
he looked afraid.
Then the lights went out.
A gunshot echoed through the mansion.
Everyone screamed.
When the lights returned...
Victor was gone.
But on the table was a new message.
Written in red ink.
Three words.
"ASK YOUR MOTHER."
Back at the Whitmore mansion...
Daniel confronted Margaret.
"What haven't you told me?"
Margaret looked exhausted.
"I was hoping you would never have to know."
"Know what?"
She looked at him.
A tear rolled down her face.
"The truth about your birth."
Daniel froze.
"What?"
Margaret whispered:
"Jonathan Whitmore was not your biological father."
Silence.
The entire world stopped.
Daniel couldn't breathe.
"Then who is?"
Margaret looked toward the dark hallway.
May you like
And whispered the name that would change everything.
"Victor."
