CHAPTER 16 — Margaret’s Lost Child

The message stayed on Daniel’s phone all night.
"Ask Margaret why she chose you over her own child."
He read it again.
And again.
Every time, the same question appeared.
Her own child?
Margaret had always told him she only had two children.
Daniel.
Olivia.
But now...
another secret.
Another hidden life.
Another person erased from the family story.
Daniel was exhausted from discovering truths that should have been told to him decades ago.
But this time was different.
Because this secret wasn't about his father.
It was about the woman who raised him.
The woman who held his hand when he was sick.
The woman who stood beside him at every important moment.
Margaret.
The next morning, Daniel found his mother in the old garden.
The same garden where she used to sit with him when he was a child.
For a moment, he saw the woman he remembered.
Not the woman from the secrets.
Not the woman from the lies.
Just his mother.
"Mom."
Margaret looked up.
She immediately knew.
"What did you find?"
Daniel held up his phone.
Her face changed.
She didn't need to read it.
She already knew.
"Who was my child?"
The question broke something inside her.
Margaret looked away.
"Daniel..."
"No."
His voice was calm.
But full of pain.
"Please."
"Not another secret."
"Not another thing everyone knew except me."
Margaret closed her eyes.
Then she whispered:
"Her name was Anna."
Daniel sat down.
"Anna?"
Margaret nodded.
"She was my first child."
The words felt impossible.
"Where is she?"
Margaret looked toward the garden.
"She died."
Daniel's expression softened.
"When?"
"Before you were born."
Silence.
"How?"
Margaret's hands trembled.
"Because of the Whitmore family."
Twenty-nine years earlier...
Margaret was not the powerful woman everyone saw.
She was young.
In love.
And desperate to protect her daughter.
Anna was born with a heart condition.
She needed expensive surgery.
A surgery that could save her life.
But Margaret's father-in-law refused to help.
He believed money should only go toward the future of the Whitmore empire.
Not a sick child.
Margaret begged.
She pleaded.
But nobody listened.
Then Jonathan made a decision.
He secretly paid for the treatment.
But by then...
it was too late.
Anna didn't survive.
And Margaret never forgave herself.
"Why didn't you tell anyone?"
Daniel asked.
Margaret wiped her tears.
"Because after Anna died..."
"I realized something."
"What?"
"Children could disappear in this family."
She looked at him.
"And nobody would care."
Daniel felt a pain in his chest.
"Is that why you took me?"
Margaret's eyes filled with tears.
"At first..."
She stopped.
Daniel noticed.
"At first?"
Margaret looked down.
"I didn't know if I could love you."
The honesty hurt.
"But then..."
"You smiled at me."
"And you called me Mom."
Her voice broke.
"Nobody had called me that since Anna."
Daniel looked away.
The anger inside him became complicated.
Because the woman who lied to him...
was also the woman who loved him.
Meanwhile, Alexander discovered something that changed everything.
He was searching through Victor's hidden files when he found a document.
A document that Victor had kept secret.
A DNA report.
But not Daniel's.
His own.
Alexander stared at the result.
His face slowly changed.
"No..."
The report revealed something impossible.
Victor Whitmore was not his biological father.
Just like Daniel.
Just like everyone else.
The Whitmore family was built on stolen identities.
Alexander dropped the paper.
All his revenge.
All his hatred.
Everything was based on a lie.
Emily found him later that day.
"What happened?"
Alexander handed her the report.
She read it.
Then looked up.
"Who is your father?"
Alexander laughed bitterly.
"I don't know."
Emily stared.
"None of us know."
For the first time, Alexander looked defeated.
"I spent my entire life wanting what Daniel had."
"What?"
"A family."
Emily quietly replied:
"Maybe none of us had one."
That evening, Daniel gathered everyone again.
But this time...
he wasn't looking for answers.
He was demanding them.
"One person started this."
Everyone looked at him.
"One person created all these lies."
Margaret nodded.
"Yes."
"Who?"
Nobody spoke.
Then Olivia stepped forward.
"I know."
Everyone turned.
Daniel stared at his sister.
"You?"
Olivia looked terrified.
"I found something years ago."
"What?"
She took out a small notebook.
"I found it after Father's funeral."
Daniel opened it.
Inside were notes written by Jonathan.
One sentence appeared repeatedly.
"The original heir must never return."
Daniel frowned.
"Original heir?"
Olivia nodded.
"My father was afraid of someone."
"Who?"
She looked at him.
"The first child of the Whitmore family."
Daniel felt a chill.
"Victor?"
Olivia shook her head.
"No."
"Someone older."
Suddenly, the mansion security system activated.
A video appeared.
The same mysterious man from before.
But this time...
he wasn't alone.
Behind him stood a woman.
An elderly woman.
Everyone recognized her.
Margaret stood frozen.
"No..."
Daniel looked confused.
"Who is she?"
Margaret whispered:
"My mother-in-law."
The woman who had controlled the Whitmore family for decades.
The woman everyone believed was dead.
The screen showed her smiling.
"I see my family has finally started asking questions."
Daniel stepped closer.
"Who are you?"
The woman looked directly into the camera.
"My name is Eleanor Whitmore."
"And I am the reason every secret in this family exists."
The screen went black.
Nobody moved.
Because everyone understood.
The true mastermind had finally appeared.
Not a missing lover.
Not a forgotten child.
Not a betrayed brother.
May you like
But the woman who created the entire empire.
The woman who had been pulling the strings from the beginning.
