CHAPTER 6 — The Night Claire Vanished

The old recording was hidden behind a loose wooden panel in his father's study.

Daniel found it by accident.

Or at least, that's what he wanted to believe.

But after everything he had discovered, he no longer believed in accidents.

Not anymore.

He stood in the dark room, holding the small black device in his hand.

It looked ancient.

Almost forgotten.

A tiny label was attached to it.

"October 14 — Do Not Destroy."

The date.

The same night Claire disappeared.

Daniel stared at it for several seconds.

His heart was pounding.

He knew he should call his mother.

He knew he should wait.

But after twenty-eight years of lies...

he needed the truth.

He pressed play.

At first, there was only static.

Then a man's voice appeared.

His father's voice.

"Claire, you don't understand what you're doing."

Daniel froze.

His father's voice sounded different.

Not confident.

Not powerful.

Afraid.

A woman's voice answered.

Claire.

"You lied to me, Jonathan."

Daniel closed his eyes.

Hearing her voice made the past feel alive.

"You promised you would tell your family the truth."

Jonathan sighed.

"I tried."

"No."

Claire's voice trembled.

"You were afraid."

A long silence followed.

Then his father spoke.

"Someone found out about the baby."

Daniel's breathing stopped.

The baby.

Rebecca.

Claire continued:

"They want me gone."

"Who?"

Jonathan didn't answer.

That was the most frightening part.

"Jonathan..."

"Who wants me gone?"

The recording became filled with noise.

A chair moving.

Footsteps.

Then another voice appeared.

A voice Daniel had never heard before.

But his body immediately reacted.

Because he recognized the name mentioned.

"Margaret."

His mother's name.

The unknown person said:

"You need to fix this."

Jonathan sounded angry.

"No."

"You promised."

"I said no."

A loud sound followed.

Something falling.

Then Claire screamed.

The recording suddenly cut off.

Daniel stood frozen.

His hand shook.

Someone else had been there.

Someone who threatened his father.

Someone who knew about Claire.

Someone who wanted her gone.

"Daniel."

He turned quickly.

Margaret stood at the doorway.

Her face had lost all color.

"You found it."

It wasn't a question.

Daniel held up the recorder.

"You knew this existed."

Margaret looked down.

"Yes."

The betrayal hurt more than he expected.

"You knew there was evidence."

"I was afraid."

"Afraid of what?"

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Of what would happen if the truth came out."

Daniel stepped closer.

"Mom."

His voice became quiet.

"Did you hurt Claire?"

Margaret looked like the question physically wounded her.

"No."

"Then tell me everything."

She closed her eyes.

For a moment, Daniel thought she would finally speak.

But then...

the mansion alarm suddenly went off.

Both of them turned.

A loud noise came from the study.

Daniel ran inside.

The drawer where the recording had been stored was open.

The device was gone.

Someone had entered the room.

Someone had taken it.

Outside the mansion, a black car disappeared into the rain.

Inside sat a man holding the stolen recorder.

He smiled as he listened to the damaged audio.

"Almost twenty-eight years..."

He whispered.

"And they still haven't learned."

He deleted part of the recording.

Then he looked at another item sitting beside him.

A photograph.

A photograph of Daniel.

And Emily.

The man smiled.

"The wedding failed."

"But the real show is just beginning."

The next morning, the Whitmore family woke up to another disaster.

The company's stock had dropped overnight.

News outlets were reporting accusations about Jonathan Whitmore's past.

Anonymous documents had been sent to reporters.

The headline spread everywhere:

"Whitmore Legacy Built on a Missing Woman's Silence?"

Daniel stood inside the company headquarters watching the chaos.

Executives rushed around him.

Employees whispered.

Everyone was afraid.

His family's reputation was collapsing.

But Daniel wasn't focused on the business.

He was focused on one question.

Who was behind it?

His assistant approached.

"Mr. Whitmore?"

Daniel turned.

"What?"

"There is someone here to see you."

"Who?"

The assistant hesitated.

"Emily Carter."

Daniel went silent.

After everything that happened...

after the wedding...

after the humiliation...

he wasn't sure he wanted to see her.

But something told him he needed answers.

"Send her in."

A few moments later, Emily entered.

She looked different.

Not like the confident bride from days ago.

She looked exhausted.

Scared.

Daniel stared at her.

"Why are you here?"

Emily took a breath.

"Because I owe you the truth."

He said nothing.

She placed a folder on his desk.

"I didn't come into your life by accident."

Daniel's expression hardened.

"I know."

"I was investigating your family."

The words hurt.

But he expected them.

"Why?"

Emily looked at him.

"Because my father was one of the people who searched for Claire after she disappeared."

Daniel frowned.

"What?"

"My father worked for your grandfather."

A cold feeling moved through him.

"What did he know?"

Emily's eyes filled with regret.

"He knew Claire wasn't missing."

Daniel stared.

"What are you saying?"

She whispered:

"Claire was alive after that night."

Silence.

Daniel couldn't move.

"Where?"

Emily looked down.

"I don't know."

"Then how do you know?"

She opened the folder.

Inside was an old photograph.

A woman.

Older.

Different.

But unmistakable.

Claire.

On the back of the photograph was a date.

Five years after her disappearance.

Daniel's hands trembled.

Five years.

Claire had survived.

She had lived.

Someone had hidden her.

But why?

And who?

Emily looked at him.

"There is something else."

Daniel looked up.

"What?"

Emily swallowed.

"The person who hid Claire..."

"...is still alive."

A silence fell between them.

Then Daniel asked the question neither of them wanted to answer.

"Who?"

Emily looked toward the window.

At the city below.

And whispered:

"Someone inside your family."

That night, Margaret sat alone in the mansion.

She opened a hidden box she had kept locked for decades.

Inside was a letter.

A letter from Claire.

The first line was enough to bring tears to her eyes.

"Margaret, if anything happens to me, please protect my daughter."

Margaret held the letter against her chest.

"I'm sorry, Claire."

A tear fell.

"I tried."

Then her phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered.

A man's voice spoke.

"You kept the secret for twenty-eight years."

Margaret froze.

"Who is this?"

The man laughed.

"But now Daniel knows."

A pause.

"And soon..."

"He will know what you did."

Margaret's face turned pale.

Because she knew exactly what he meant.

The truth was coming.

But not all secrets were buried.

Some secrets were waiting.
