CHAPTER 8 — The Child Nobody Knew Existed

The document arrived at midnight.

No sender.

No return address.

Just a plain black envelope placed beneath the front door of the Whitmore mansion.

Daniel found it while everyone else was asleep.

At first, he thought it was another threat.

Another attempt to destroy his family.

But when he opened it, he realized something much worse.

It was a truth.

A truth that had been hidden for decades.

Inside was a birth certificate.

An old one.

The paper was faded.

The ink was almost unreadable.

But one thing remained clear.

The father's name.

Jonathan Whitmore.

Daniel stared at the page.

His hands slowly began to shake.

Another child.

Another secret.

Another person his father had kept hidden.

He whispered:

"No..."

Because he already knew what this meant.

Rebecca was not the only secret.

The next morning, Daniel called everyone to the mansion.

Margaret.

Olivia.

Emily.

Even Rebecca.

Everyone arrived with questions.

Everyone could feel something was different.

Daniel placed the birth certificate on the table.

Nobody spoke.

Margaret saw it.

And the color disappeared from her face.

"You knew."

Daniel's voice was quiet.

His mother looked away.

"Daniel..."

"No."

He shook his head.

"Not this time."

"How many secrets are there?"

Margaret closed her eyes.

"I don't know."

The answer shocked everyone.

"You don't know?"

Margaret looked broken.

"Your father had another life before he became the man you knew."

Rebecca stepped closer.

"Another life?"

She laughed bitterly.

"So I wasn't the only one."

Daniel looked at her.

For the first time, he saw something other than anger in her eyes.

Pain.

Because she had spent her entire life believing she was the only abandoned child.

Now she realized she might have been one of many.

Emily watched silently.

She had spent months investigating the Whitmore family.

She thought she knew every secret.

She was wrong.

A person had been hiding in the shadows.

Someone connected to Jonathan.

Someone who had access to documents.

Someone who wanted the truth revealed piece by piece.

Daniel looked at her.

"Do you know anything about this?"

Emily hesitated.

That hesitation immediately caught his attention.

"What?"

She looked down.

"My father mentioned another child."

The room went silent.

Daniel stared.

"When?"

"Years ago."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because I thought it was just a rumor."

Daniel stepped closer.

"Emily."

Her eyes filled with regret.

"I didn't know if it was real."

Rebecca looked at her coldly.

"You knew about us."

"I knew about Claire."

"No."

Rebecca shook her head.

"You knew there was more."

Emily couldn't deny it.

Because she did.

Her father had left behind a journal.

A journal she had not shown anyone.

That afternoon, Emily finally brought the journal.

It was old.

Leather-covered.

The pages smelled like dust and time.

"My father wrote this before he died."

Daniel opened it.

The first pages were normal.

Business notes.

Names.

Dates.

Then the handwriting changed.

The words became rushed.

Fearful.

"I helped them hide Claire."

Daniel stopped.

Emily looked away.

"But Claire was not the only person they wanted hidden."

Daniel turned the page.

His heart began racing.

"Jonathan had a son."

Everyone froze.

A son.

Not Rebecca.

Not Daniel.

Another son.

The mansion became silent.

Olivia spoke first.

"That's impossible."

Daniel looked at her.

"Why?"

"Because Dad only had you."

Rebecca laughed quietly.

"That's what they wanted everyone to believe."

Daniel continued reading.

The journal revealed a shocking detail.

Jonathan had a child with another woman years after Rebecca was born.

A child who was taken away.

A child whose identity was erased.

A child who grew up believing the Whitmore family had stolen his life.

The final sentence on the page was written in dark ink.

"He will return when the Whitmores are weakest."

Daniel looked up.

"Who is he?"

Nobody answered.

Then Rebecca's phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

Her face changed.

"Who is it?"

She didn't respond.

Daniel took a step closer.

"Rebecca?"

Slowly, she turned the phone around.

The message was visible.

One sentence.

"Hello, sister."

Everyone froze.

Another message appeared.

A photograph.

A man standing outside the Whitmore mansion.

Daniel recognized him immediately.

Because he had seen him before.

The man who had been helping destroy the family.

The man who had been one step ahead of everyone.

The man who had stolen the recording.

His name was written below the photo.

Alexander Whitmore.

That evening, Daniel searched through old family records.

But Alexander's name appeared nowhere.

No birth records.

No school records.

No photographs.

Nothing.

It was as if he never existed.

Then he found something hidden inside his father's old safe.

A letter.

Addressed to Alexander.

Daniel opened it.

Only one sentence was written inside.

"If you ever return, remember this: Daniel knows nothing. Protect him from the truth."

Daniel stared at the words.

His own father had warned someone to protect him.

But from what?

And why?

Meanwhile, Alexander sat inside a luxury apartment overlooking the city.

He watched news reports about the Whitmore scandal.

He smiled.

Everything was happening exactly as planned.

His phone rang.

A woman spoke.

"Are you sure you want to continue?"

Alexander looked at a photograph on his desk.

A photograph of Jonathan Whitmore.

"I waited my entire life."

The woman sighed.

"Revenge won't change the past."

Alexander smiled.

"I'm not trying to change the past."

"I'm trying to make them feel it."

He looked toward the city.

"Daniel took the life I should have had."

"He grew up with a family."

"A name."

"Everything."

The woman asked:

"And what will you take from him?"

Alexander answered calmly:

"Everything."

Later that night, Daniel stood alone outside the mansion.

The place where he had grown up no longer felt like home.

It felt like a battlefield.

His wedding had collapsed.

His family was falling apart.

His father was not the man he thought he was.

And now he had a brother who wanted revenge.

But the biggest question remained:

Why had Alexander waited twenty-eight years to return?

And what secret was he hiding?

Because according to the final page of Thomas Carter's journal...

May you like

Alexander was not the biggest secret.

He was only the beginning.
