Chapter 4 - The Video in Court

The courtroom lights dimmed.
The driveway video appeared on the main screen.
Rachel’s car entered first.
Tyler’s SUV blocked it from behind.
Vanessa stepped out.
Tyler opened Rachel’s door.
Judith leaned inside and removed the phone and spare key.
No one in the courtroom spoke.
The recording had no dramatic music.
No explanation.
Only a clear sequence of deliberate choices.
Judith placed the bottle in the cup holder.
Tyler locked the doors.
Vanessa moved the diaper bag.
Then Judith said the sentence that ended her custody argument.
“Keep the baby inside.”
“It makes her breakdown seem believable.”
Judge Pike shifted in his chair.
Judith stood.
“The audio has been altered.”
The prosecutor displayed the security-system authentication log.
The file carried an encrypted signature created by Thomas’s private network.
Any change would invalidate it.
The signature remained intact.
The judge asked Tyler whether he wished to respond.
His attorney refused.
Rachel looked at Judith.
“You heard Lily crying.”
Judith’s expression remained still.
“You left her.”
No answer came.
The prosecutor then played Mrs. Alvarez’s statement.
She had watched Tyler’s SUV arrive.
She had seen Rachel moving weakly behind the wheel.
She had seen Judith walk away with the key.
Judge Pike suspended the custody petition.
He granted Rachel sole temporary custody and issued protective orders against Tyler, Vanessa, Judith, and Martin Cole.
Then the prosecutor approached the bench.
He handed the judge another document.
It was an arrest warrant for Judith.
She stood before the deputies reached her.
“You are making a mistake.”
The judge looked at the screen.
“No.”
“I made the mistake when I allowed this hearing to begin.”
Judith was handcuffed in front of the reporters she invited.
As deputies led her toward the door, she turned to Rachel.
“You think this is about Tyler’s affair.”
“It is not.”
Rachel closed her eyes.
Judith continued.
“Ask your mother what Thomas left Lily.”
I felt every gaze turn toward me.
Rachel looked confused.
“Grandpa left Lily something?”
Thomas had died six months before Lily was born.
His will contained no mention of a future grandchild.
At least, that was what our attorney told me.
The prosecutor approached.
“Mrs. Bennett, we need to search your husband’s office again.”

On the security monitor, Judith had not entered the room to steal money.
She had been photographing a document hidden beneath Thomas’s desk.
