Chapter 1 - The Third Person

The detective froze the security footage as the third person turned toward the hidden camera.

Tyler stopped breathing.

Vanessa raised one hand over her mouth.

I stared at the woman on the screen.

Judith Cole.

Tyler’s mother.

She was sixty-one, impeccably dressed, and known throughout the county as a family-law attorney who represented wealthy fathers in difficult custody cases.

She had attended Lily’s baby shower.

She had held my granddaughter and whispered that she would always protect her.

Now the camera showed Judith leaning through Rachel’s window while Tyler stood beside the rear door.

Judith removed Rachel’s phone.

She took the spare key fob from the diaper bag.

Then she placed a small bottle inside the cup holder.

“Keep the baby inside,” she said.

“It makes her breakdown seem believable.”

The detective turned toward Tyler.

“Is that your mother?”

Tyler’s attorney stepped forward.

“My client will not answer questions without a formal interview.”

The detective ignored him.

He pointed toward the monitor.

“Mrs. Cole placed something in the vehicle.”

“What was it?”

Vanessa began crying.

Tyler grabbed her wrist.

“Do not say anything.”

The detective noticed.

“Let go of her.”

Tyler released Vanessa slowly.

I advanced the recording.

Rachel could be seen struggling in the driver’s seat.

Her movements were delayed and weak.

Tyler leaned inside and pressed the door lock.

Vanessa moved the diaper bag beyond Rachel’s reach.

Judith watched Lily crying in the back seat.

Then Tyler closed the door.

The three of them walked to the silver SUV.

The car remained beneath the sun.

No one looked back.

The detective asked for the entire recording to be copied.

I entered my late husband’s password.

The system displayed a warning.

SECONDARY ARCHIVE ACTIVE.

My husband, Thomas, had created an automatic off-site backup after someone tried to disable the garage camera two years earlier.

I had never understood why.

Now I did.

The footage was already stored somewhere Tyler could not reach.

The detective placed Tyler under arrest for attempted murder, child endangerment, and unlawful restraint.

Vanessa was detained as an accomplice.

Judith was nowhere in the house.

Her image disappeared from the driveway recording twenty-seven minutes before I returned from the pharmacy.

As officers led Tyler away, he turned toward me.

“You have no idea what Rachel has done.”

“She stole from my family.”

I looked at the image of my unconscious daughter trapped behind glass.

“No.”

“Your family tried to steal her life.”

Then the computer made a sound.

A second video had been flagged automatically.

It showed Judith entering Thomas’s office six months before his death.
