Chapter 16 - Tyler’s Excuse
Tyler’s defense centered on his mother.
He claimed Judith controlled every decision.
She chose his schools.
She managed his finances.
She arranged his career.
She taught him that marriage was a transaction.
His attorney argued that Tyler feared her.
Rachel listened from the second row.
Then the prosecutor played a video from Vanessa’s apartment.
Tyler stood near the window drinking champagne.
Vanessa asked whether he felt guilty.
He answered.
“Rachel had every chance to sign.”
“She chose the hard way.”
Judith was not in the room.
No one threatened him.
He sounded relaxed.
The prosecutor presented text messages where Tyler suggested using the baby to make the psychiatric story believable.
Judith replied that it was risky.
Tyler insisted.
He had not merely obeyed the plan.
He improved it.
On the witness stand, Tyler cried.
He said he loved Lily.
He said the locked car was intended to frighten Rachel.
He said Victor changed the medication dose.
The prosecutor asked why he did not open the car when he saw Lily crying.
Tyler answered.
“My mother said to wait.”
The prosecutor looked toward the jury.
“He was thirty-four years old.”
“He knew how doors worked.”
Rachel did not testify in person.
Her hospital statement and recorded interview were admitted.
She described hearing Lily’s cries while being unable to move.
She remembered Tyler standing outside the window.
She remembered trying to lift her hand.
She remembered him pushing it away from the unlock button.
That detail appeared on the hidden microphone recording.
The jury convicted Tyler of attempted murder, kidnapping, child endangerment, conspiracy, and fraud.
He received fifty-eight years.
His parental rights were terminated permanently.
As deputies led him away, he looked at Rachel.
“You will tell Lily about me.”
Rachel stood.
“I will tell her the truth when she is old enough.”
