Chapter 18 - Thomas’s Final Recording
The damaged office server contained one file we had not opened.
It required Rachel’s trust authorization.
After the trials ended, she entered the code.
Thomas appeared on the screen.
He was seated at his desk.
“I hope this recording is unnecessary,” he said.
“But if Rachel has opened it, then Judith moved against the trust.”
He explained that he had suspected Tyler before the wedding.
Tyler requested information about Rachel’s inheritance during their first private conversation.
Thomas warned Rachel gently.
She believed Tyler was trying to understand her family.
Thomas did not want to control her choice.
So he protected the future child instead.
“I made the mistake of believing legal documents could stop people willing to ignore law,” he said.
“That is why the cameras matter.”
“Truth must exist somewhere outside the room where power is speaking.”
Then Thomas revealed a final secret.
Bennett Medical was not the true target.
Its identification system protected a national database of infants separated from families through fraudulent custody cases.
Thomas had helped build the database after discovering Judith’s earlier victims.
He wanted to reunite children with mothers whose records had been altered.
The hidden system contained hundreds of names.
Judith knew only part of it existed.
Victor wanted the company because he believed the database could expose every transaction he financed.
The car plot was meant to obtain Lily’s trust.
It was also meant to destroy the family line capable of opening the database.
Rachel looked toward Lily.
“What opens it?”
The recording answered.
“Three generations.”
“Diane.”
“Rachel.”
“And the child.”
My fingerprint.
Rachel’s voice.
Lily’s newborn blood signature.
Together, we opened the archive.
The screen filled with case files.
Children declared adopted without valid consent.
Mothers labeled unstable.
Birth records altered.
Some cases dated back thirty years.
Judith’s network was larger than the women already identified.
