Chapter 2 - The Bottle in the Cup Holder

The hospital laboratory identified two substances in Rachel’s blood.
The first was a powerful sedative.
The second was a medication that could cause confusion, overheating, and memory loss when combined with dehydration.
The empty electrolyte bottle in the cup holder contained both.
Rachel had not locked herself inside the car.
She had been drugged before Tyler closed the door.
Dr. Elena Morris explained that Rachel’s body temperature had reached a dangerous level.
Lily had suffered severe dehydration.
Both were alive because I returned earlier than expected.
I had forgotten one item at the pharmacy.
That mistake saved them.
Rachel woke shortly after midnight.
Her eyes moved slowly around the room.
Then she saw Lily sleeping inside a clear bassinet.
“Is she alive?”
I caught her hand.
“She is safe.”
Rachel began crying.
“I could hear her.”
“I couldn’t move.”
“What happened before Tyler brought you to my house?”
She closed her eyes.
“Judith came over.”
“She said Tyler wanted to apologize.”
“They gave me the electrolyte drink because I felt dizzy.”
“Vanessa was there.”
“Did you know about Vanessa before today?”
Rachel nodded.
“I found their messages last week.”
“I told Tyler I was leaving.”
“He said I would never take Lily from him.”
She gripped my fingers.
“Mom, they wanted me to look crazy.”
The detective entered with permission from her doctor.
He showed Rachel the still image of Judith.
Rachel turned pale.
“She wrote the papers.”
“What papers?”
“An emergency custody petition.”
“Judith said I had postpartum psychosis.”
“She said Tyler would receive temporary custody if I had one public incident.”
Rachel had never been diagnosed with postpartum psychosis.
She had struggled with exhaustion and anxiety after Lily’s birth.
Tyler recorded her crying.
Judith transformed those recordings into evidence.
A nurse delivered the full toxicology report.
The sedative in Rachel’s blood had been prescribed under another patient’s name.
The prescribing physician was Dr. Martin Cole.
Judith’s brother.
Tyler’s uncle.
The detective looked at me.
“This was planned by more than three people.”
Then my phone rang.
Judith’s name appeared on the screen.
I answered on speaker.
She did not sound frightened.
“Diane, return my son’s child.”
I looked toward Lily’s bassinet.
“She is Rachel’s child.”
May you like
Judith’s voice became cold.
“Not after tomorrow morning.”
