Chapter 15 - The Trial Begins
The prosecution tried Judith, Tyler, Vanessa, Martin, and Victor in separate proceedings.
The charges overlapped.
Attempted murder.
Kidnapping.
Child endangerment.
Fraud.
Conspiracy.
Evidence fabrication.
Thomas’s murder.
Judith’s trial came first.
She entered wearing a navy suit and carrying a legal pad.
For decades, courtrooms had been her territory.
She still believed language could control what people saw.
Her attorney described the driveway scene as a misguided family intervention.
He claimed Rachel became agitated after discovering Tyler’s affair.
Judith, he said, removed the phone to prevent Rachel from making impulsive calls.
The prosecutor played the entire recording.
Not only the line about keeping Lily inside.
The camera captured Judith checking her watch eleven minutes later.
Vanessa asked whether they should return.
Judith answered.
“Not until Rachel stops moving.”
The defense had no harmless explanation for that sentence.
Mrs. Alvarez testified.
She described the locked windows.
The crying baby.
The white medical van.
Then I testified.
I described the tiny hand against the glass.
Breaking the window.
Lily’s burning skin.
Rachel whispering Tyler and Vanessa before losing consciousness.
Judith watched me without expression.
Her attorney suggested I hated her because of family disagreements.
I looked at the jury.
“I did not know enough about her to hate her.”
“I know enough now.”
Martin testified under a cooperation agreement.
He admitted killing Thomas.
He admitted preparing Rachel’s false psychiatric records.
He admitted waiting in the van with a body bag.
Judith stared at him.
“You weak man,” she whispered.
The courtroom microphone captured it.
The prosecutor turned.
“Mrs. Cole, is weakness what you call people who tell the truth about you?”
Judith said nothing else.
The jury convicted her on every major count.
Before sentencing, Rachel spoke.
“You made a career convincing courts that mothers were unstable.”
“You used professional respect to hide violence.”
