Chapter 3 - The Hearing at Nine

Judith had filed an emergency custody petition before the car was discovered.
The hearing was scheduled for nine the next morning.
The petition claimed Rachel abandoned Lily inside a vehicle during a psychiatric episode.
Tyler was described as a concerned father who arrived too late to prevent the crisis.
Judith attached witness statements.
One came from Vanessa.
Another came from Dr. Martin Cole.
The third carried my name.
My signature had been forged.
According to the statement, I had warned Tyler that Rachel was unstable and unsafe around the baby.
I stared at the document.
Judith had prepared my testimony before attempting to kill my daughter.
Rachel’s attorney requested that the hearing be canceled.
The assigned judge refused.
His name was Leonard Pike.
He had worked with Judith for twenty years.
He agreed to hear video evidence but would not delay the case unless Rachel appeared personally or provided medical proof that she could not attend.
Rachel could barely sit up.
Her doctor signed a letter.
Judge Pike called it insufficient.
“He wants Tyler to win before the criminal charges are filed formally,” Rachel’s attorney said.
I looked at my daughter.
“Then we attend.”
Rachel tried to move her legs.
Pain crossed her face.
“I can’t stand.”
“You do not need to stand.”
“You only need to be seen.”
At eight-thirty, Rachel was transported to the courthouse by ambulance.
Lily remained in the hospital under police protection.
Tyler appeared through a secure video connection from the county jail.
Judith entered the courtroom wearing a white suit.
She had not been arrested.
Her attorneys claimed the driveway footage had been manipulated.
Judge Pike allowed her to sit beside Tyler’s family counsel.
I recognized two reporters in the rear row.
Judith had invited them to document Rachel’s breakdown.
Instead, they watched paramedics wheel my daughter into court.
Rachel wore a hospital gown beneath a blanket.
Medical lines remained attached to her arm.
Burn marks from the heated seat covered the back of her shoulder.
Judge Pike looked uncomfortable.
Judith did not.
She stood.
“Your Honor, this performance demonstrates Mrs. Cole’s instability.”
Rachel lifted her head.
“I was drugged and locked in a car.”
Judith smiled patiently.
“That is what she believes.”
The prosecutor entered through the side door.

He carried a sealed copy of Thomas’s security footage.
“Then perhaps,” he said, “the court should see what actually happened.”
