Chapter 5 - THE HOUSE MOVES

The night before Ethan's flight home, the moving crew arrived.

The house was prepared before dawn.

Furniture had already been removed.

Personal belongings were packed.

Important documents were secured.

The porch swing came down last.

Natalie stood beside Ray.

“Ready?”

Ray looked at the house.

“Ready.”

Hydraulic equipment moved beneath the structure.

Steel beams slid into position.

The workers communicated through hand signals.

Slowly, the house lifted.

Natalie's breath caught.

The foundation separated from the home with a deep mechanical groan.

For a moment, she felt as though she were watching her entire marriage rise from the ground.

The memories came.

Claire's first birthday.

Mason learning to ride a bicycle.

Christmas mornings.

Ethan's first promotion.

The first time he told her he loved her.

The first time she realized he was lying.

All of it existed inside those walls.

But the walls were not the memories.

She was.

Her children were.

She wiped her eyes.

Ray looked over.

“You okay?”

Natalie nodded.

“Yes.”

The house began its journey.

Down the road.

Across the county.

Toward land her father had purchased years ago.

By sunset, the old property was empty.

Natalie returned one final time.

She stood in the center of the lot.

The silence was enormous.

She whispered, “Goodbye.”

Not to the house.

To the woman she had been inside it.

May you like

Then she walked away.
