Chapter 2 - THREE WEEKS EARLIER

Three weeks before the empty lot, Natalie had been sitting across from Ethan at the kitchen island.

Her coffee was cold.

His was untouched.

Sienna's name appeared on his phone.

Natalie had seen it several times.

She had stopped asking questions.

Not because she didn't care.

Because she already knew the answers.

Ethan folded his hands.

“I've decided to start over.”

Natalie looked at him.

“With Sienna?”

“Yes.”

There was no hesitation.

No shame.

No apology.

Just certainty.

“How long?”

“What?”

“How long have you been seeing her?”

Ethan sighed.

“That's irrelevant.”

Natalie almost smiled.

Of course.

Everything inconvenient was irrelevant.

“How old is she?”

“Twenty-six.”

Natalie nodded.

Their marriage had lasted nineteen years.

Their children were sixteen and eighteen.

Ethan was forty-seven.

Sienna was twenty-six.

The numbers sat between them.

Then Ethan said something that hurt more than the affair.

“I deserve a new life.”

Natalie stared at him.

“You deserve whatever life you choose.”

“I knew you'd understand.”

“No.”

His eyebrows tightened.

“I don't understand you.”

“You don't have to.”

He leaned back.

“I've already made arrangements.”

“For what?”

“The wedding.”

Natalie felt her fingers go cold.

“You're marrying her?”

“Overseas.”

“When?”

“Three weeks.”

“And the children?”

“They're coming.”

Natalie looked toward the hallway.

Their daughter, Claire, was standing there.

Their son, Mason, was behind her.

Neither spoke.

They had heard everything.

Claire's eyes were wet.

Mason looked furious.

Ethan stood.

“I don't want a scene.”

Natalie slowly rose.

“You won't get one.”

He looked surprised.

She continued.

“You've made your choice.”

Then she walked upstairs.

She closed the bedroom door.

She sat on the edge of the bed.

And for the first time in nineteen years, she allowed herself to ask a question she had avoided for too long.

Who am I if I stop being Ethan's wife?

The answer came slowly.

She was still Natalie.

Daughter.

Mother.

Business owner.

Heir to a piece of land her father had protected for years.

And, most importantly, she was still the person who had the right to decide what happened next.

That night, Ethan sent the message.

Be gone when we return.

Natalie read it twice.

Then she opened the county property records.

The deed was still exactly as she remembered.

Owner: Natalie Caldwell.

She stared at her father's name in the old transfer documents.

He had warned her once.

“Never give someone control over what they didn't build.”

At the time, she thought he was talking about business.

Now she understood.

May you like

He had been talking about people.
