Chapter 12 - THE CHILDREN SPEAK
The custody hearing came next.
Claire spoke first.
She was nervous.
Her hands trembled.
The judge asked gently, “What do you want?”
Claire swallowed.
“I want to stay with Mom.”
“Why?”
Claire looked down.
“Because she makes me feel safe.”
Ethan closed his eyes.
Mason spoke next.
“I don't hate my dad.”
Ethan looked up.
“But I don't trust him.”
That sentence hurt more than any accusation.
Mason continued.
“He told Mom to disappear.”
The judge listened.
“He said he deserved a new life.”
Mason's voice cracked.
“But we were already his life.”
Ethan looked at his son.
For the first time, his expression wasn't angry.
It was ashamed.
The judge granted Natalie primary custody.
Ethan received structured visitation.
Outside the courtroom, Claire hugged Natalie.
Mason stood beside them.
Ethan remained alone.
He watched his family walk away.
He finally understood that losing a house was nothing.
He had lost something much harder to rebuild.
