Chapter 18 - THE HOUSE ON THE HILL

The relocated house stood on a hill overlooking a quiet stretch of countryside.
Natalie had renovated it.
Not to preserve the past.
To change it.
The old kitchen became a bright open room.
The walls were repainted.
The porch was rebuilt.
Family photographs replaced the wedding portraits.
The bedroom that had once belonged to Ethan became Natalie's office.
She kept one thing unchanged.
The front door.
The same door Ethan had walked through thousands of times.
The same door he had once expected Natalie to walk away from.
One evening, Mason stood beside her.
“Mom?”
“Yes?”
“Do you ever wish you had fought sooner?”
Natalie thought for a long time.
“Yes.”
Then she shook her head.
“But I don't punish myself for not knowing what I know now.”
Claire joined them.
“You saved the house.”
Natalie smiled.
“No.”
She looked at her children.
“We saved ourselves.”
The sunset covered the hill in gold.
Natalie watched it quietly.
The house no longer felt like a monument to a failed marriage.
It felt like proof.
She had not been erased.
May you like
She had rewritten the ending.
