Chapter 11 - THE AUDIT

The investigation lasted weeks.

Ethan's confidence disappeared one document at a time.

Unauthorized transfers.

Unreported transactions.

Personal expenses charged to company accounts.

Properties pledged as collateral without proper authorization.

Nothing alone would destroy him.

Together, they were devastating.

Victor Hale agreed to testify.

So did Ethan's former accountant.

Even Sienna provided documents.

She wasn't doing it out of loyalty to Natalie.

She was protecting herself.

But the effect was the same.

Ethan's attorney called him.

“You need to understand the seriousness of this.”

“I'll settle.”

“With what?”

Silence.

The question hurt because there was no answer.

His luxury car was sold.

The yacht was sold.

Several investments were liquidated.

His mansion was placed under a court-supervised restriction.

And then came the final blow.

Caldwell Development lost its largest contract.

The board voted to remove Ethan as managing director.

He walked into the meeting expecting loyalty.

He found strangers.

Victor stood.

“Your personal conduct made the company vulnerable.”

Ethan laughed bitterly.

“You're removing me from my own company?”

Victor looked at him.

“No.”

He placed a document on the table.

“We're removing you from a company you never fully owned.”

Ethan stared at the signatures.

Natalie's name appeared among them.

He realized she had been the silent majority for years.

The woman he had treated like an inconvenience had been the person holding the foundation together.
