Chapter 13 - THE EMPTY LOT

Months later, Natalie returned to the old property.
The empty lot looked different.
Grass had begun growing through the tire tracks.
Wildflowers appeared near the edge.
There was no evidence of the house anymore.
Mason stood beside her.
“Do you miss it?”
Natalie thought.
“I miss who I was there.”
Claire took her hand.
“Do you want to go back?”
Natalie looked at the empty sky.
“No.”
She smiled.
“I don't.”
They stood quietly.
Then Natalie said something neither child expected.
“I'm going to sell this land.”
Mason frowned.
“Why?”
“Because I don't need it anymore.”
Claire smiled.
“What will you do with the money?”
Natalie looked toward the road.
“Build something new.”
She had learned that revenge was not always destruction.

Sometimes revenge was freedom.
