Chapter 4 - The Battle Begins

Within days, everything changed.
The perfect family image disappeared.
Friends called.
Neighbors asked questions.
People who had only seen Ryan’s charming side suddenly saw another person.
The company investigation began.
The financial records were examined.
And Vanessa disappeared.
But my father found her.
Not personally.
Professionally.
Through lawyers.
Through evidence.
Through patience.
“She knows Ryan is exposed,” my father told me.
“She will try to protect herself.”
A week later, Vanessa’s attorney contacted us.
She wanted immunity.
In exchange for information.
I couldn't believe it.
The woman who helped destroy my marriage was now afraid.
“What does she know?”
My father looked serious.
“Everything.”
The meeting happened in a private office downtown.
When Vanessa walked in, she looked nothing like the confident woman I remembered.
She looked scared.
She sat across from me.
“Emily.”
I stared at her.
“You knew.”
Her eyes dropped.
“Yes.”
The word hurt.
“You knew he was married.”
“Yes.”
“You knew about Lily.”
A tear rolled down her face.
“Yes.”
I wanted to hate her.
But mostly I felt exhausted.
“Why?”
She swallowed.
“Because Ryan told me he was leaving you.”
I closed my eyes.
Of course.
The oldest lie.
“He said you were controlling him.”
I almost laughed.
Because I finally understood.
Ryan didn't just lie to me.
He created a version of me that didn't exist.
A villain in his story.
“So what happened?”
My father asked.
Vanessa looked terrified.
“He wasn't just stealing money.”
Everyone became silent.
“What else?”
May you like
She looked at me.
“He was planning to disappear.”
