Chapter 3 - The Woman Behind The Betrayal

I knew Vanessa.

Not well.

But enough.

She had attended company events.

She had smiled at me.

Complimented my dress.

Told me how lucky I was to have Ryan.

Now I wondered how many times she had laughed behind my back.

The worst betrayal wasn't discovering the affair.

It was realizing everyone else might have known before me.

My father hired an attorney that afternoon.

Not because he wanted revenge.

Because he wanted protection.

“This is no longer just a marriage problem,” he told me.

“This involves financial crimes, possible fraud, and your safety.”

I looked at him.

“I don't want Lily growing up thinking her family was destroyed.”

My father sighed.

“Emily, your family wasn't destroyed because you told the truth.”

He looked toward the window.

“It was damaged because someone chose to lie.”

That night, Lily slept in my room.

She refused to leave me.

“Mom?”

“Yes?”

“Are you mad at me?”

My heart broke.

“What?”

“Because I called Grandpa.”

I pulled her closer.

“Sweetheart, you saved me.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I was scared.”

“I know.”

“I thought Daddy was going to hurt you more.”

I held her tighter.

“You did the right thing.”

The next morning, Ryan called from his attorney’s office.

I almost didn't answer.

But I did.

“Emily.”

His voice sounded different.

Less confident.

“I need you to listen.”

“No.”

A pause.

“Please.”

I stayed silent.

“I made mistakes.”

Mistakes.

That word.

I hated that word.

Because people used it when they wanted forgiveness without responsibility.

“You didn't make mistakes, Ryan.”

My voice shook.

“You made choices.”

He didn't answer.

Then he said something that surprised me.

“Your father is destroying my life.”

I laughed quietly.

“No.”

I looked at Lily.

“He saved mine.”

Silence.

Then Ryan whispered:

“You don't understand what you're doing.”

That sentence scared me.

May you like

Because it wasn't an apology.

It was a threat.
