Chapter 17 - Ryan’s Last Chance

A year after the divorce was finalized, I received a letter.

From Ryan.

I almost threw it away.

But I opened it.

The letter was simple.

No excuses.

No blame.

No manipulation.

Just honesty.

Emily,

I know I have no right to ask for anything from you.

I destroyed the trust you gave me.

I hurt the person who believed in me the most.

And the hardest part is knowing Lily was the one who saw the worst version of me.

I stopped reading for a moment.

Then continued.

I have spent the last year trying to understand why I became that person.

Not to excuse what I did.

But because I never want to be that person again.

At the bottom, there was one final sentence.

I hope someday Lily remembers that her father was not only the man who failed her.

I hope she remembers I tried to become better.

I folded the letter.

For years, I wanted Ryan to suffer.

I wanted him to feel the pain he caused.

But now?

I didn't want revenge anymore.

I wanted peace.

A week later, Ryan requested permission to see Lily.

The court had already approved supervised visits.

I watched from a distance.

Ryan sat across from his daughter.

At first, neither spoke.

Then Lily asked:

“Are you sorry?”

Ryan looked at her.

“Yes.”

“Really?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Ryan took a deep breath.

“Because I hurt the person I was supposed to protect.”

Lily looked down.

Then quietly said:

“I was scared of you.”

Ryan closed his eyes.

“I know.”

“I don't want to be scared anymore.”

A tear fell down his face.

“I don't want you to be scared either.”

It wasn't forgiveness.

May you like

Not yet.

But it was a beginning.
