Chapter 2 - The Secret Behind Ryan’s Smile

The police arrived twenty minutes later.
Ryan tried to regain control.
That was the thing about him.
Even when everything collapsed, he believed he could talk his way out.
He always had.
At work.
With friends.
With me.
Especially with me.
“I made a mistake,” he told the officers.
“A misunderstanding between husband and wife.”
I watched him say those words.
And something inside me finally broke.
Because that was exactly how he had survived.
By making me question myself.
By convincing me every argument was my fault.
Every problem was because I was too emotional.
Too sensitive.
Too dramatic.
But now there were witnesses.
There was Lily.
There was my father.
And there was the truth.
One officer approached me.
“Mrs. Carter, are you comfortable making a statement?”
I looked at Ryan.
For years, I would have been afraid.
Afraid of destroying our family.
Afraid of embarrassing him.
Afraid of what people would say.
But then I looked at Lily.
My daughter was sitting beside my father.
Holding his hand.
Trying not to cry.
And I realized something.
A child should never have to protect their mother.
A mother should protect her child.
“Yes.”
My voice was quiet.
But steady.
“I want to make a statement.”
Ryan’s expression changed.
“Emily.”
I ignored him.
The officer wrote everything down.
The argument.
The accusation.
The attack.
The moment Lily called my father.
Everything.
After the police left, Ryan was taken away for questioning.
The house became silent.
The kind of silence that comes after a storm.
My father sat beside me.
“You should have told me.”
I looked down.
“I thought I could fix it.”
He shook his head.
“No.”
His voice was gentle.
“You thought you could survive it.”
Those words hurt more than anything.
Because they were true.
I had spent years surviving.
Not living.
The next morning, my father showed me the folder.
“What is this?”
I asked.
He opened the first page.
“Ryan has been stealing money from his company.”
I stared at him.
“What?”
“He created fake invoices.”
My hands went cold.
“How much?”
My father looked at me.
“Almost $700,000.”
I couldn't breathe.
“No.”
“Emily.”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“Ryan would never…”
But even as I said it, I remembered.
The late nights.
The secret phone calls.
The sudden changes.
The new passwords.
The way he became angry whenever I asked questions.
My father continued.
“He also transferred money through accounts connected to another woman.”
My heart stopped.
Another woman.
“No.”
My father didn't say anything.
He didn't need to.
Because the truth was already entering my mind.
All those times Ryan said he was working late.
All those business trips.
All those moments when I felt something was wrong.
I finally understood.
The abuse wasn't the beginning.
It was the end result.
The final desperate act of a man whose lies were collapsing.
“Who is she?”
I whispered.

My father looked at the document.
“Her name is Vanessa Miller.”
