Chapter 19 - Facing The Past

The meeting happened in a quiet restaurant outside Chicago.
Victor Hayes was older than I expected.
Calm.
Polite.
Almost ordinary.
That was what scared me.
Dangerous people rarely look dangerous.
He smiled at me.
“Emily.”
I hated hearing my name from him.
“You destroyed many lives.”
Victor sighed.
“Your father always believed I was the villain.”
“Were you?”
He smiled slightly.
“Everyone has their own version of the truth.”
My father leaned forward.
“No.”
His voice was firm.
“Some things are facts.”
Victor looked at him.
“You still haven't changed, Charles.”
“And neither have you.”
The conversation revealed the final truth.
Victor had wanted control of my father's company decades ago.
When Daniel failed, Victor waited.
When Ryan appeared, Victor saw an opportunity.
He used people's weaknesses.
Their greed.
Their anger.
Their pain.
But he made one mistake.
He underestimated me.
“You thought I was weak.”
Victor looked at me.
“I thought you were emotional.”
I smiled.
“That was your mistake.”
Because emotions were not weakness.
Love was not weakness.
Protecting my family was not weakness.
It was the reason I survived.
The evidence we collected was enough.

Victor Hayes was finally exposed.
The last shadow from the past disappeared.
