Chapter 11 - The Secret My Father Buried

For thirty years, I believed I knew how my mother died.

A rainy night.

A dangerous highway.

A tragic accident.

That was the story my father told me.

The story everyone told me.

But one message from Michael Miller destroyed everything I believed.

Ask your father what happened the night your mother died.

I stared at those words for hours.

I didn't sleep.

I couldn't.

Because suddenly, my entire childhood felt like a question mark.

The next morning, I confronted my father.

He was sitting in his office, looking through documents.

The moment he saw my face, he knew.

“What happened?”

I placed my phone on the desk.

He read the message.

And his expression changed.

Not surprise.

Pain.

“You knew this day might come.”

My father slowly sat down.

“Emily…”

“Was Mom’s death really an accident?”

Silence.

The silence answered before he did.

My eyes filled with tears.

“Dad.”

He closed his eyes.

“No.”

My heart stopped.

“No?”

“She died because of someone who wanted to destroy me.”

I stepped back.

“Who?”

My father looked at the floor.

“Daniel Carter.”

The name I had heard so many times.

Ryan’s father.

The man whose betrayal started everything.

“He caused the accident?”

My father shook his head.

“Not directly.”

“Then what happened?”

My father finally told me the truth.

Thirty years earlier, Daniel Carter had discovered that my mother had found evidence of his financial crimes.

She was going to expose him.

So Daniel threatened her.

He followed her.

He tried to scare her into silence.

That night, during a storm, Daniel’s men chased her car.

She lost control.

And she never came home.

I covered my mouth.

I couldn't breathe.

“My whole life…”

My voice broke.

“You let me believe she just died.”

My father looked devastated.

“I was trying to protect you.”

“You were protecting me with a lie.”

He looked away.

And for the first time in my life, I saw my father cry.

“I was afraid that if you knew the truth, you would become a target.”

I wanted to be angry.

I wanted to blame him.

But I also saw something else.

A father who had carried guilt for decades.

Then my phone rang.

It was Ryan.

I almost didn't answer.

But I did.

“Emily.”

His voice was shaking.

“Michael knows you found out.”

I froze.

“How?”

“Because I told him.”

The confession hit me like a punch.

“You?”

Ryan swallowed.

“I thought he would protect me.”

I felt disgusted.

“You helped him destroy my family.”

“I know.”

“Why are you calling?”

May you like

A long pause.

“Because Michael is going to kill me.”
