Chapter 6 - THE CHILD THEY DID NOT NEED

Victoria was still inside county custody.

At least, that was what the official record showed.

Detective Ellis called the detention center.

Victoria’s transfer van had left twenty minutes earlier for a medical evaluation.

It never reached the clinic.

The driver and guard were found unconscious inside the vehicle.

Victoria was gone.

Graham Vale had arranged the escape.

Richard looked again at the flight manifest.

“Why are Ethan and Noah listed but not Liam?”

Emily examined the trust documents.

The triplets shared most of their inheritance.

One portion was different.

Claire had placed the controlling shares of Hawthorne Biomedical into Liam’s personal trust.

Liam was the youngest by eleven minutes.

Claire believed the child with the weakest health would need the strongest protection.

If Liam died, the shares passed to his brothers.

If all three children became medically incapacitated, Victoria could temporarily control everything.

But if only Ethan and Noah disappeared overseas, Liam’s shares remained beyond her reach.

“They need Liam for something else,” Emily said.

Richard looked toward the boys’ room.

The triplets were almost identical.

Most strangers could not tell them apart.

Victoria could.

She had spent months studying their habits.

Liam slept with his right hand beneath his cheek.

Noah repeated the final word of a sentence when frightened.

Ethan always stepped between his brothers and danger.

“Liam knows a password,” Richard said.

Claire had created a biometric vault containing the controlling-share certificates.

The vault required Richard’s fingerprint and a spoken phrase from Liam after his fifth birthday.

Only Claire, Richard, and Graham Vale knew it existed.

Richard had never told Victoria.

Vale had.

The conspirators did not plan to take Liam to Switzerland.

They planned to use him to open the vault first.

Marcus contacted the mansion.

The vault was beneath Claire’s former art studio.

Security sensors showed someone had entered the building.

Richard ran toward the elevator.

Emily followed.

“You stay with the boys,” he said.

“The person who knows their routines should remain with them.”

“I am coming because Victoria will expect you to think like a businessman.”

“What will she expect from you?”

“That I think like someone who protects children.”

Detective Ellis divided her team.

Officers secured the hospital.

Richard, Emily, Marcus, and Ellis drove toward the Hawthorne estate.

Rain still covered the roads.

At the mansion, the art studio door stood open.

Fresh footprints crossed the floor.

The hidden vault panel had been exposed behind Claire’s largest painting.

Victoria stood before it.

She held a frightened boy by the shoulder.

Richard froze.

He had left all three sons in the hospital.

Yet Liam stood inside the studio wearing hospital pajamas.

Emily looked closely.

The child did not place his right hand near his face.

He repeated Victoria’s last word under his breath.

“Vault.”

It was not Liam.

May you like

It was Noah.

Victoria had taken the wrong triplet.
