Chapter 11 - THE MISSING MEDICAL SAMPLES

The missing compartment contained the only physical evidence proving Claire had been poisoned.

Vale denied removing it.

Victoria denied seeing it.

Detective Ellis searched the tunnels, studio, and greenhouse.

Nothing was found.

The boys were returned to the hospital under armed protection.

Noah told his brothers how he pretended to be Liam.

Ethan became angry.

“You could have been hurt.”

Noah repeated the final word quietly.

“Hurt.”

Then he hugged Ethan.

Liam placed his hand beneath his cheek and cried.

Emily sat between them.

“You protected each other.”

Richard watched from the doorway.

He had almost lost all three because he ignored the one adult they trusted.

The laboratory results from Victoria’s pill case arrived.

The tablets contained a combination designed to create weakness, nausea, and confusion.

The effects usually disappeared within hours.

Repeated exposure could create serious long-term harm.

Dr. Cole had selected the compounds.

Victoria had delivered them.

Graham Vale had paid for them.

Owen Pike had attempted to increase the dose at the hospital.

The conspiracy was clear.

Claire’s death remained harder to prove.

Her official samples had been destroyed years earlier.

Without the hidden compartment, Vale could claim her recording reflected fear caused by illness.

Marcus reviewed the underground archive.

One camera captured the moment the brass box was opened.

Emily lifted the original trust.

A shadow moved behind the equipment shelves.

The housekeeper, Margaret Dunn, appeared briefly.

She removed the sealed medical compartment and slipped it beneath her apron.

Richard stared at the screen.

Margaret had managed Hawthorne House for thirty-one years.

She stood in the hallway when Victoria accused Emily of theft.

She said nothing.

Police searched her room.

It was empty.

Her clothing was gone.

A note rested on the bed.

I protected this family before any of you understood what protection required.

Richard read it twice.

“Margaret worked for my father.”

Emily looked at Claire’s recording.

“She may know what happened before Vale took control.”

Marcus traced Margaret’s employee phone.

It had been turned off near an old Hawthorne pharmaceutical laboratory outside Stamford.

The facility closed after William Hawthorne’s death.

Richard remembered visiting it as a child.

His father told him the building produced nutritional supplements.

Claire had asked about the property months before she became ill.

Richard dismissed her questions.

Detective Ellis organized a search team.

Emily remained with the boys this time.

Richard prepared to leave.

Ethan called him back.

“Daddy.”

Richard knelt.

The boy handed him the recorder.

“We copied more videos.”

“What videos?”

“Grandma Margaret came into our room too.”

Richard pressed play.

The footage showed Margaret removing the boys’ milk glasses after Victoria left.

She poured the liquid into small labeled bottles.

Then she replaced the drinks with clean milk.

Margaret had known about the poisoning.

Some nights, she stopped it.

Other nights, she did not arrive in time.

The final clip showed her speaking directly to the nursery camera.

“I am sorry, Claire.”

“I waited too long again.”
