Chapter 20 - THE BLACK ORCHARD FILE

Graham Vale’s brother was named Thomas Vale.

Official records stated he died during a sailing accident.

His body was never found.

Police captured him after the collision.

He refused to answer questions.

Inside his vehicle, detectives found photographs of Emily, Richard, and the triplets.

They also found a list of families whose children had been treated by Cole Medical Group.

Several names matched victims from William Hawthorne’s old laboratory.

Thomas Vale had continued the guardianship operation after Graham entered the Hawthorne family.

Graham was not the leader.

He was the attorney who protected the visible side.

Samuel Voss remained the original architect.

Detective Ellis searched the new medical office across from Emily’s hospital.

The building was empty.

Every computer had been removed.

One file remained inside a locked cabinet.

It carried the Black Orchard symbol.

The file described Ethan, Noah, and Liam from the day they were born.

Their medical histories.

Their trust values.

Their routines.

Their fears.

Emily’s name appeared beneath theirs.

The final page contained a recent instruction.

EMILY CARTER MUST REMAIN CLOSE TO THE CHILDREN.

Richard read it twice.

“They wanted you inside the mansion.”

Emily felt cold.

She had believed Eleanor hired her because of Claire’s investigation.

Perhaps someone else made sure Eleanor found her.

Black Orchard may have positioned Emily as another piece in a longer plan.

Detective Ellis opened a sealed envelope attached to the file.

Inside was a photograph of Samuel Voss.

The image had been taken recently.

He stood outside Hawthorne House during the night Victoria planted the Rolex.

The mansion gates had been open for less than six minutes.

Someone inside security allowed him through.

Marcus checked the access logs.

The authorization used his personal code.

“I did not enter it,” he said.

Richard looked at him.

Marcus removed his badge and placed it on the table.

“Until you know the truth, I should not control security.”

Emily studied the photograph.

Samuel Voss stood beside another person.

Only one hand appeared at the edge of the frame.

The hand held the silver pill case.

Victoria had claimed Graham Vale gave it to her.

The photograph suggested someone else delivered it.

Detective Ellis received a call from the prison.

Victoria Lane had requested an emergency meeting.

She claimed Samuel Voss visited her before the poisoning began.

He told her Claire was still alive.

Richard gripped the table.

Claire had been declared dead four years earlier.

Her body had been cremated under Graham Vale’s supervision.

Victoria now claimed the ashes did not belong to her.

Emily entered the prison interview room with Richard and Detective Ellis.

Victoria looked older behind the glass.

She placed both hands on the table.

“Samuel said Claire survived the night she died.”

“He said Graham moved her to a Black Orchard facility.”

Richard’s voice failed.

“Why would they keep her alive?”

Victoria looked toward Emily.

“Because Claire knows where the original patient records are hidden.”

“And because she knows who chose Emily.”

Emily leaned closer.

“Who chose me?”

Victoria’s eyes filled with fear.

“Claire did.”

Richard stared at her.

Victoria continued.

“She knew they would target the triplets.”

“She arranged for you to enter the mansion before they took her.”

“She has been protecting the boys from somewhere inside Black Orchard.”

Detective Ellis placed Claire’s final photograph on the table.

“Where is the facility?”

Victoria whispered an address.

It belonged to an abandoned children’s hospital in northern Connecticut.

Police entered the property before dawn.

They found empty rooms.

Medical equipment remained warm.

Someone had left minutes earlier.

Inside the final room stood three small beds.

Each carried the name of one Hawthorne triplet.

A fourth bed stood beside them.

The name on its frame was Emily Carter.

On the wall above it, someone had written a message in Claire’s handwriting.

Emily saved my sons once.

Now she must decide whether to save me.

Richard touched the words.

A phone began ringing inside the empty room.

Emily answered.

A woman breathed on the other end.

Then Claire Hawthorne’s voice whispered,

“Do not trust the person standing beside Richard.”

The call ended.

Emily slowly turned.

Richard stood beside Detective Ellis.

Marcus waited near the doorway.

A hospital officer stood behind him.

One of them had been part of Black Orchard from the beginning.

And somewhere beyond the abandoned hospital, Claire Hawthorne was still alive.
