Chapter 3 - THE WOMAN IN THE MAID’S UNIFORM

The boys remained asleep through the night.

Emily refused to leave the hospital.

Richard did not ask her to.

At four in the morning, he found her sitting between the triplets’ beds.

She held Liam’s hand while watching the monitors.

“You know more about medicine than any housekeeper I have met,” Richard said.

Emily did not look at him.

“I was a pediatric nurse.”

Richard stopped.

“Why did you never tell me?”

“You never asked.”

“That does not explain why you became a maid.”

Emily released Liam’s hand carefully.

Seven years earlier, she worked at a private clinic owned by the Cole Medical Group.

She discovered that Dr. Adrian Cole had falsified records involving children from wealthy families.

He changed test results.

He prescribed unnecessary medication.

He helped parents and guardians create medical evidence for custody disputes.

Emily reported him.

Cole denied everything.

The clinic claimed Emily had stolen confidential files.

Her nursing license was suspended during the investigation.

The charges were eventually dropped.

Her reputation did not recover.

“No hospital would hire me,” she said.

“I took any work I could find.”

Richard looked through the glass at his sons.

“And Cole knew who you were.”

“He recognized me on the first day he visited the mansion.”

“Why didn’t he have you fired?”

“He tried.”

“Mrs. Eleanor stopped him.”

Eleanor Hawthorne had been Richard’s mother.

She hired Emily shortly before her death.

Eleanor told the staff that Emily’s history was proof of courage, not dishonesty.

Richard had never known.

“My mother trusted you.”

“Yes.”

“I did not.”

“No.”

The word carried no anger.

That made it worse.

Richard sat across from her.

“I threw money at your feet.”

“You did.”

“I allowed security to drag you outside.”

“You did.”

“I believed Victoria without checking one camera.”

Emily finally looked at him.

“Your apology can wait.”

“Your sons cannot.”

A nurse entered with a sealed evidence bag.

Inside was the silver pill case.

Police had found it beneath the passenger seat of Victoria’s car.

The case contained twelve tablets.

Laboratory technicians were testing them.

Richard stared at the silver surface.

He remembered buying it for Victoria in Paris.

She told him she used it for vitamins.

Detective Ellis arrived with more news.

Victoria’s planted Rolex had been recovered from the library desk.

The watch was not hers.

It belonged to Richard.

He had reported it missing six months earlier.

Someone had taken it from his safe and waited for the right moment to use it.

“The library footage shows Victoria placing it in Emily’s bag,” Ellis said.

Richard looked at Emily.

“You were framed because you found the recorder.”

Emily shook her head.

“I was framed because Victoria realized the boys trusted me.”

Detective Ellis placed photographs on the table.

They showed documents found inside Victoria’s dressing room.

The papers authorized the transfer of Ethan, Noah, and Liam to Ravenscroft Academy in Switzerland.

The final page contained Richard’s signature.

Richard examined it.

“I never signed this.”

Emily noticed another signature beneath his.

Dr. Adrian Cole had certified that the triplets required long-term residential treatment.

The date on the document was tomorrow.
