Chapter 16 - THE LAST HAWTHORNE SECRET
Charles did not resist when Marcus opened the gate.
He entered the library and placed the black case on Richard’s desk.
The same desk where Victoria planted the Rolex.
Emily remained near the doorway.
Richard stood across from his uncle.
“Did you poison Claire?”
Charles removed his wet coat.
“No.”
“Did you help Vale?”
“Yes.”
The answer came without hesitation.
Charles claimed Claire planned to expose William Hawthorne’s illegal medical programs.
He believed publication would destroy the company.
He asked Vale to stop her.
Vale contacted Cole.
Charles insisted he expected them to discredit Claire, not kill her.
“You gave them access,” Richard said.
“I protected what your father built.”
“My father built it by harming people.”
“He built hospitals.”
“He also built the reason families needed them.”
Charles looked older than his seventy-four years.
“Do you understand what happens when Hawthorne Biomedical collapses?”
“Employees lose pensions.”
“Patients lose medicine.”
“Competitors take everything.”
Richard shook his head.
“You all use other people as shields for your choices.”
Charles opened the case.
Inside were original financial ledgers from William’s laboratory programs.
He had preserved them for decades.
“Why bring these now?” Emily asked.
“Because Vale will trade every secret to save himself.”
“Then testify.”
Charles looked toward the triplets’ photograph.
“I will.”
Richard studied him.
“You came here for another reason.”
Charles nodded.
One program in the ledgers involved a treatment developed for children with rare neurological conditions.
William buried it after early patients suffered complications.
Years later, Cole modified the compound.
He used a diluted version to make Claire and the boys ill.
Vale believed the substance disappeared from every record.
It had not.
Charles had kept a sealed formula inside the case.
The evidence connected William, Cole, Vale, and Charles.
It also proved Victoria knew the pills were dangerous.
“Will this convict them?” Richard asked.
“It will convict all of us.”
Police arrived shortly afterward.
Charles surrendered.
Before leaving, he looked at Richard.
“You will lose the company.”
“Perhaps.”
“The Hawthorne name will become poison.”
Richard looked toward the nursery staircase.
“A name is less important than three children.”
Charles almost smiled.
“Claire said the same thing.”
At trial, Charles confessed to conspiracy and obstruction.
Vale’s defense collapsed.
Cole changed his plea.
Victoria continued denying responsibility until prosecutors played the nursery video.
The jury watched her crush the tablets.
They watched her plant the watch.
They watched her discuss sending the boys away.
The defense argued she had been controlled by Vale.
The prosecutor answered with Noah’s words.
“Sorry does not open the case.”
The jury found Victoria guilty of poisoning, kidnapping, fraud, and conspiracy.
Vale was convicted of Claire’s murder.
Cole was convicted of helping cause her death and poisoning the triplets.
Charles accepted his sentence without appeal.
