Chapter 12 - THE ABANDONED LABORATORY

The old laboratory stood behind chain-link fencing and dead trees.

Its Hawthorne sign had faded almost white.

Richard entered with Detective Ellis and Marcus.

Police searched the main floor.

The building smelled of dust and chemicals.

Margaret sat inside a former testing room.

Claire’s medical compartment rested on the table.

She did not attempt to run.

Richard stood across from her.

“You knew.”

Margaret nodded.

“I suspected Victoria after the boys became ill.”

“You watched her enter their room.”

“I began checking the milk.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because Graham Vale controlled the household cameras.”

“I needed evidence outside his reach.”

“You let Emily be thrown into the rain.”

Margaret’s face filled with shame.

“I believed the recorder would reach you first.”

“It did not.”

“No.”

“You stayed silent.”

“Yes.”

Richard looked at the medical compartment.

“What happened to Claire?”

Margaret had served William Hawthorne before Richard inherited the mansion.

She knew the truth about the old laboratory.

William funded illegal medical programs through Dr. Cole’s father.

Graham Vale created settlements that prevented families from speaking publicly.

Claire discovered the records.

She planned to release them.

Vale convinced Margaret that public exposure would destroy the company and leave thousands unemployed.

Then Claire became sick.

Margaret realized too late that Vale and Cole were causing the illness.

“Did you help them?” Richard asked.

“I changed two medication bottles because Vale told me Claire had become confused.”

“I believed him.”

“For how long?”

“Three weeks.”

Emily’s words returned to Richard.

Adults confused fear with loyalty.

Margaret had served the Hawthornes for decades.

She obeyed the family attorney because she believed obedience protected the household.

By the time she understood, Claire was dying.

“She asked me to preserve samples,” Margaret said.

“She also asked me to protect Emily.”

“Why Emily?”

“Claire investigated Cole’s clinic.”

“She found Emily’s old complaint.”

“She knew Emily was telling the truth.”

Margaret pushed the compartment toward Detective Ellis.

“I am ready to testify.”

A noise came from the upper level.

Marcus looked toward the stairs.

Someone was inside the laboratory.

Police moved through the corridor.

A man ran toward the emergency exit.

Marcus recognized him.

Dr. Adrian Cole had escaped custody during a courthouse transfer.

Cole carried a gasoline container.

He had come to destroy the laboratory.

He poured fuel across the archive room.

Richard followed him.

Cole held a lighter.

“If these records survive, your father’s name disappears.”

Richard stopped.

“My father’s name deserves whatever the truth gives it.”

Cole ignited the floor.

Flames spread toward the old files.

The laboratory alarms failed.

Cole ran through the rear exit.

Richard moved toward the fire.

Marcus pulled him back.

“The samples are secure.”

Richard looked at the shelves containing decades of evidence.

“No.”

“Families waited years for these records.”

He activated the building’s emergency sprinkler manually.

Water fell across the archive.

Some documents burned.

Hundreds survived.

Outside, police captured Cole near the fence.

Margaret watched the smoke rise.

“The Hawthornes spent years protecting their name.”

May you like

Richard looked at the rescued files.

“Then we begin protecting the people they harmed.”
