Chapter 1 - THE RECORDER IN THE RAIN

The handheld recorder flickered beneath the pouring rain.

Victoria Lane appeared on the tiny screen.

She stood beside Ethan’s bed at 12:43 a.m.

Her diamond bracelet caught the nursery’s night-light as she opened the silver pill case.

Richard Hawthorne stopped breathing.

The video showed Victoria crushing a pale tablet between two spoons.

She divided the powder among three glasses of warm milk.

Noah began crying beside Emily.

“That’s what she gave us.”

Victoria lunged for the recorder.

Emily blocked her path.

“Do not touch him.”

Richard seized Victoria’s wrist.

“What did you put in their milk?”

Victoria stared at him.

“This video is fake.”

The security director, Marcus Hale, stepped through the gate.

His dark suit was soaked.

“The footage is authentic, sir.”

Victoria pulled away from Richard.

“Emily manipulated it.”

Marcus shook his head.

“The file came from the nursery’s internal camera.”

“The camera was never broken.”

“Someone changed the access records to make it appear offline.”

Richard’s face hardened.

“Who changed them?”

Marcus looked directly at Victoria.

“The command came from the private terminal inside your dressing room.”

Victoria’s fear vanished behind sudden anger.

“You have no right to search my computer.”

“You gave me permission when you accused an employee of theft.”

Richard looked toward the mansion.

“Lock every gate.”

Victoria took one step backward.

“You cannot imprison me here.”

“No one is leaving until the police arrive.”

A weak sound came from Ethan.

The boy folded forward and gripped his stomach.

Emily caught him before he fell.

Noah began shaking.

Liam’s knees buckled beside the stone driveway.

Richard dropped to the ground.

“What is happening?”

Emily pulled off her yellow cleaning gloves.

“They drank something before I was thrown out.”

Victoria shook her head quickly.

“They had their normal bedtime milk.”

Emily looked at her.

“Who prepared it?”

Victoria did not answer.

Emily placed Ethan on his side and checked his breathing.

“Call an ambulance.”

Richard reached for his phone.

Victoria turned toward the gate.

Marcus blocked her.

The triplets’ chef, Maria Santos, came running from the mansion.

Her face was pale.

“Mr. Hawthorne, I did not prepare their drinks.”

“Miss Lane told me the boys would not need anything tonight.”

Sirens sounded beyond the estate walls.

Victoria looked toward the trees.

For the first time, Richard saw her measuring the distance to the fence.

He looked down at his sons.

Then he looked at the cash still scattered across the wet driveway.

He had thrown it at the only person who had tried to protect them.

Emily lifted Ethan into her arms.

“You can hate me later.”

“Right now, help me keep them awake.”

Richard gathered Noah and Liam against him.

The ambulance entered through the gates.

As paramedics rushed forward, Noah pressed the recorder into his father’s hand.

“There’s another video.”

Richard looked at the screen.

“What video?”

May you like

Noah’s voice became barely audible.

“The one where Victoria talks to the doctor.”
