Chapter 19 - CLAIRE’S LAST VIDEO

Richard pressed play.
Claire appeared inside the nursery archive.
She looked weaker than in the earlier recordings.
Her hands trembled.
“I do not have much time.”
Emily closed the bedroom door so the sleeping boys would not hear.
Claire continued.
“Graham believes I discovered everything.”
“He is wrong.”
“Graham did not begin this.”
“He inherited it.”
Richard looked toward Emily.
The trial had established William Hawthorne’s illegal programs.
It had not explained who designed the system that Vale later used.
Claire lifted an old photograph.
William Hawthorne stood beside three men inside the abandoned laboratory.
One was Graham Vale’s father.
One was Dr. Cole’s father.
The third man’s face had been scratched away.
“The third founder created the medical guardianship strategy.”
“He taught them how to make healthy heirs appear incapable.”
“He disappeared before Richard inherited the company.”
Claire coughed.
“I believed he was dead.”
“Then I saw him outside the triplets’ school.”
Richard paused the recording.
The boys had attended a private preschool for only three months before Claire became ill.
Claire pressed something toward the camera.
It was a silver ring engraved with a black tree.
“I took this from his coat.”
“Eleanor knows the symbol.”
“If I die, ask her about Black Orchard.”
The video ended.
Richard searched his mother’s archived correspondence.
Black Orchard appeared in only one document.
It was the name of a private guardianship organization that worked with Ravenscroft Academy.
The organization had been dissolved twenty-five years earlier.
Its founder was listed as Dr. Samuel Voss.
Samuel Voss died in a plane crash before Richard was born.
No body was recovered.
Emily stared at the scratched photograph.
“Claire said she saw him.”
Richard contacted Detective Ellis.
She reopened the historical files.
The plane crash report had been signed by Graham Vale.
The death certificate had been approved by Cole’s father.
The organization did not disappear after Voss’s supposed death.
It continued through shell foundations.
One foundation had recently purchased a medical office across from Saint Matthew’s Children’s Hospital.
Emily worked directly across the street from it.
Marcus checked the hospital cameras.
An elderly man had watched Emily enter the building every morning for three weeks.
He wore a silver ring engraved with a black tree.
Richard called Emily.
She was already driving home.
“Do not go to your apartment.”
“Why?”
“Someone connected to Vale is watching you.”
Emily checked her mirror.
A dark sedan remained two cars behind her.
She turned left.
The sedan followed.
Richard contacted police.
Emily drove toward a crowded intersection.
The sedan accelerated.
Before it reached her, another vehicle struck it from the side.
The sedan spun into a barrier.
A masked driver climbed out.
He looked toward Emily.
Then he removed his mask.
Marcus recognized the face through the traffic camera.

It belonged to Graham Vale’s older brother.
A man everyone believed had died fifteen years earlier.
