Chapter 7 - VANESSA’S BABY
Vanessa called Harrison’s office asking for a private meeting.
Harrison refused until her attorney agreed to attend.
Vanessa arrived wearing large sunglasses and a gray maternity dress.
She was seven months pregnant.
Khloe did not join the meeting.
She watched through a secure video link from another room.
Vanessa placed a folder on the table.
“I want immunity.”
Harrison leaned back.
“You are speaking to a private attorney.”
“I cannot offer immunity.”
“You can speak to prosecutors.”
“I can pass information to prosecutors.”
“That is not the same thing.”
Vanessa’s hands tightened.
“Richard is going to blame me.”
“He already has.”
Harrison opened a public court filing.
Richard claimed Vanessa created the shell invoices and misled him about the payments.
Her face twisted.
“He approved everything.”
“Then prove it.”
Vanessa opened the folder.
It contained voice recordings.
Richard directing transfers.
Richard discussing the forged mortgage.
Richard telling Daniel Price to prepare the custody case.
One recording changed the room.
Richard said:
“If Khloe has a medical emergency during delivery, move quickly.”
Price asked:
“What kind of emergency?”
Richard answered:
“The kind that leaves the father making decisions.”
Vanessa’s voice entered the recording.
“You said she would be fine.”
Richard replied:
“She probably will.”
“But we should be prepared for every outcome.”
Harrison stopped the audio.
“What was he preparing?”
Vanessa looked toward the table.
“A medical proxy.”
“Khloe never signed one.”
“He planned to claim she did.”
“For what purpose?”
“To control the baby’s trust.”
Khloe’s father had left her a substantial inheritance.
If Khloe died, most of it transferred to her child.
Richard could control the assets as surviving parent unless the will appointed someone else.
Khloe had updated the will with Harrison weeks earlier.
Richard did not know.
Vanessa began crying.
“I thought he loved me.”
Harrison’s voice remained cold.
“You participated in financial fraud.”
“You mocked my sister’s miscarriages.”
“You planned to stand beside a custody petition declaring her unstable.”
“Do not ask this room to confuse your disappointment with innocence.”
Vanessa wiped her face.
“I know.”
It was the first time she accepted the sentence without defending herself.
Then she said:
“My baby may not be Richard’s.”
Harrison looked up.
Vanessa had been involved with another man during the same period.
A married investor named Stephen Keller.
Richard believed the child was his son.
Vanessa was no longer certain.
Khloe felt the bitter symmetry.
Richard had used the promise of an heir to justify destroying one family.
The heir might not even be his.
Harrison did not smile.
Children were not punch lines.
“Take a lawful paternity test after delivery,” he said.
“Do not involve the unborn child in your bargaining.”
Vanessa nodded.
Before leaving, she handed him one final file.
It contained Richard’s courthouse schedule for the next month.
