Chapter 4 - THE MORNING EVERYTHING STOPPED

Richard discovered the account freeze at 6:12 a.m.
He called Khloe seventeen times.
She did not answer.
At 6:24, he called Harrison.
Harrison answered on the first ring.
“What did you do?”
Richard’s voice exploded through the speaker.
“I filed lawful motions supported by evidence.”
“You froze company accounts.”
“I froze marital and affiliated accounts used to conceal marital property.”
“You are destroying thousands of jobs.”
“No.”
“You placed thousands of jobs at risk when you moved investor money through shell companies.”
Richard became quiet.
Only for a second.
Then he changed tactics.
“This is a misunderstanding.”
“Khloe is emotional.”
“She found private messages and panicked.”
Harrison looked toward his sister.
They sat inside his secure conference room.
Khloe wore one of his wife’s soft sweaters.
Her face looked exhausted.
“Do not call my sister emotional as though that changes bank records.”
“Put her on the phone.”
“No.”
“She is my wife.”
“She is my client.”
Richard lowered his voice.
“Harrison.”
“You know what happens if this becomes public.”
“I know exactly what happens.”
“That is why I prepared the press response before filing.”
Richard swore.
Then he hung up.
Ten minutes later, Vanessa called Khloe.
Khloe answered only because the line was being recorded.
“You need to stop your brother.”
Vanessa’s voice was sharp.
“This has nothing to do with you.”
“It has everything to do with me.”
“You stole company documents.”
“They were on my family’s shared device.”
“You invaded Richard’s privacy.”
Khloe looked toward Harrison.
He nodded for her to continue.
“You called me dead weight.”
Silence.
“You laughed about my miscarriages.”
Vanessa’s breathing changed.
“You do not understand the context.”
“What context makes two dead babies funny?”
“I never said that.”
Khloe opened the message.
She read it aloud.
Maybe the third time taught her body what Richard already knows.
It was never meant to carry a Harrington heir.
Vanessa stopped breathing.
Khloe’s voice remained steady.
“You wrote that two weeks after my second miscarriage.”
“I was angry.”
“At me?”
“At the life he kept refusing to leave.”
Khloe closed her eyes.
The first honest sentence Vanessa had spoken.
“He told you he would leave?”
“For two years.”
“And you believed him?”
“He loved me.”
“He loved being wanted by two women.”
Vanessa’s tone hardened.
“You think this baby saves you?”
“No.”
“My baby is not responsible for saving a marriage.”
“Then why are you doing this?”
“Because you and Richard planned to steal everything and leave me carrying the debt.”
Vanessa laughed.
“You have Harrison.”
“You will never be poor.”
Khloe’s eyes opened.
“So it was acceptable because my brother could rescue me?”
Vanessa did not answer.
The call ended.
Harrison saved the recording.
Mara entered with new information.
A company director had received an anonymous package.
Inside were documents accusing Khloe of financial instability.
The package included prescription records for antidepressants she had never taken.
A draft custody petition claimed pregnancy hormones made her irrational.
Richard had prepared to challenge her fitness as a mother.

The betrayal was no longer only about leaving her.
He intended to take the baby too.
