Chapter 12 - HOPE
Khloe saw her daughter for the first time three days after the fall.
A nurse pushed her wheelchair into the neonatal unit.
Hope lay beneath warm light.
Wires crossed her tiny chest.
A breathing tube remained taped near her mouth.
Khloe pressed one hand against the incubator.
“She is so small.”
“She is strong,” Harrison said.
“You always say that about women who are suffering.”
He looked at her.
“You’re right.”
Khloe’s eyes remained on Hope.
“She should not have to be strong yet.”
The nurse opened the incubator and helped Khloe touch her daughter’s foot.
Hope moved.
Khloe began crying silently.
“I’m sorry.”
Harrison stood behind her.
“For what?”
“For falling.”
His expression changed.
“You did not fall.”
“You were pushed.”
“My body did not protect her.”
“Your body kept her alive through thirty marble steps.”
“Do not speak to yourself using the language of the people who hurt you.”
Khloe leaned closer to Hope.
“I’m your mother.”
“I’m here.”
“I’m not leaving.”
Hope remained in intensive care for six weeks.
Khloe underwent physical therapy.
Her hip fracture healed slowly.
She experienced nightmares whenever she heard heels on stone.
Reporters waited outside the hospital.
Harrison kept them away.
He released only essential updates.
Richard’s attorneys demanded access to Hope.
The court denied unsupervised contact.
A temporary guardian ad litem was appointed.
Richard argued he had not pushed Khloe.
The judge answered:
“You are charged with creating the circumstances in which your wife and unborn child were placed in danger.”
“The distinction does not establish safety.”
Vanessa gave birth while in county custody.
The baby was a boy.
The paternity test showed Richard was not the father.
Stephen Keller was.
Richard refused to believe the result.
He demanded another test.
It matched.
The son he had used to imagine a new dynasty belonged biologically to another man.
Vanessa requested placement with her mother.
The court approved it under supervision.
Khloe did not celebrate.
A newborn child had entered a disaster created before he could choose anyone.
She asked Harrison whether Vanessa could receive photographs of her son.
“That is not your responsibility.”
“I know.”
“But the baby is not responsible either.”
Harrison arranged lawful communication through Vanessa’s attorney.
Khloe’s compassion did not erase the prosecution.
