Chapter 1 - THE RULES OF WAR

Harrison Cole did not raise his voice.

He did not slam his fist against the desk.

He did not promise revenge.

That was how Khloe knew her brother was truly furious.

He simply turned the tablet facedown and looked at her with the same controlled expression he used before dismantling witnesses in court.

“You are not going back to that house to beg.”

Khloe wrapped both arms around her pregnant belly.

“What am I supposed to do?”

“You are going to go home.”

“You are going to smile.”

“You are going to act as though you know nothing.”

Her face tightened.

“You want me to sleep beside him?”

“No.”

“I want you to remain close enough to preserve evidence.”

“I will have security watching the property.”

“You will not eat or drink anything Richard personally gives you.”

“You will not confront Vanessa.”

“You will not sign anything.”

“And you will call me the moment you feel unsafe.”

Khloe looked toward the Manhattan skyline.

The lights reflected across Harrison’s office windows.

“I don’t know if I can pretend.”

“You survived three rounds of IVF.”

“Two miscarriages.”

“Six years of being told to wait for a man to become the husband he promised to be.”

“You can pretend for three weeks.”

“What happens in three weeks?”

“The first account freeze.”

Harrison opened a legal pad.

He had already mapped the problem.

Richard had transferred money through at least seven shell corporations.

Two were registered in Delaware.

Three were connected to luxury projects in Florida.

One belonged to Vanessa’s design firm.

The final company, Harrington Strategic Preservation, existed only on paper.

Harrison circled the name.

“This company holds the offshore transfers.”

“How do you know?”

“Because your husband made the same mistake most arrogant men make.”

“He believed complexity was the same thing as invisibility.”

Khloe looked down at the images of Richard and Vanessa together.

One photograph showed them on a private beach.

Another showed Vanessa wearing Richard’s shirt inside a penthouse Khloe had never seen.

A third showed Richard kneeling beside Vanessa’s stomach.

Her stomach was still flat.

The message beneath it read:

Our son will inherit everything.

Khloe’s baby moved.

She pressed one hand against the kick.

“He told me he wanted a daughter.”

Harrison’s expression softened for one second.

“He told you what made you stay.”

The warmth disappeared again.

“Now we deal with what he did.”

He called three people.

A forensic accountant.

A private investigator.

And a former federal prosecutor named Mara Sinclair.

Within an hour, they had secured copies of the cloud account, bank records, property documents, and messages.

Harrison created two encrypted drives.

One remained inside his office safe.

The other went into a secure evidence vault.

Khloe watched him work.

“Harry.”

He looked up.

“What if Richard finds out?”

“Then he will learn why I told you not to return unprotected.”

Harrison slid a small black device across the desk.

It looked like an ordinary pendant.

“Press the center twice if you are in immediate danger.”

“It records audio and sends your location.”

Khloe picked it up.

“You already had this?”

“I represent people who lie for a living.”

“I prepare for the moment they stop pretending.”

She closed her fingers around the pendant.

For the first time since reading Vanessa’s message, Khloe felt something other than grief.

Not hope.

Control.

Harrison leaned back.

“There is one more thing.”

“What?”

“Richard is not only hiding money from you.”

“He is hiding debt from his investors.”

“How much?”

“At least eighty million dollars.”

Khloe stared at him.

“If the company is failing, why is he buying penthouses?”

“Because the penthouse is not for romance.”

“It is collateral.”

“For what?”

May you like

Harrison looked directly at her.

“For the life he intends to build after you take the fall.”
