Chapter 6 - THE COLLAPSE OF HARRINGTON COMMERCIAL

The forensic audit began with seven accounts.

It expanded to sixty-three.

Harrington Commercial Group owed more than two hundred million dollars.

Richard had hidden losses through false valuations.

He used deposits from future projects to finish older buildings.

He moved investor money into personal properties.

He paid Vanessa’s design company twelve million dollars for work valued at less than one million.

The company was not merely unstable.

It was built on a financial landslide.

The independent directors removed Richard as chief executive.

He refused to accept the vote.

He locked himself inside the corporate office.

Security escorted him out.

News cameras captured the entire scene.

Richard blamed Harrison publicly.

“My wife’s brother is using personal influence to seize a private company.”

Harrison issued one statement.

“I do not own, control, or seek control of Harrington Commercial Group.”

“I represent a shareholder and spouse whose signature was forged.”

“The company’s own directors removed Mr. Harrington.”

Investors began filing claims.

Federal investigators opened a securities case.

Banks demanded information.

Richard’s magazine covers disappeared from office walls.

His allies stopped answering calls.

Vanessa remained beside him.

At least publicly.

Privately, messages showed she was moving money from their penthouse account.

She transferred eight hundred thousand dollars into a trust under her mother’s name.

Mara found the transfer.

“She is preparing to leave him.”

Khloe looked at the screen.

“Does he know?”

“No.”

“Will you tell him?”

Harrison shook his head.

“That is not our job.”

Khloe felt no satisfaction.

Richard and Vanessa had built their relationship on the belief that betrayal made them special.

Now betrayal was becoming the language between them too.

The court ordered the Lower Merion mansion sold.

Because the mortgage exceeded its value, neither spouse would receive proceeds.

Khloe walked through the house once before leaving permanently.

The nursery remained unfinished.

The empty crib box sat against the wall.

She opened it.

Inside was nothing but cardboard and packing paper.

Richard had not even bothered to replace the crib he gave Vanessa.

Khloe sat on the floor.

For six years, she had decorated empty spaces with future promises.

The marriage.

The nursery.

The family photographs.

Each looked solid until she touched it.

Harrison found her there.

“You don’t have to stay.”

“I know.”

“Then why are you sitting on the floor?”

Khloe looked around the room.

“Because I want to remember I left before my daughter learned this was love.”

Her brother sat beside her.

His expensive suit pressed against the unfinished floor.

Neither spoke for several minutes.

Then Khloe picked up the pair of cream-colored baby booties she had shown Richard.

May you like

She placed them inside her purse.

Everything else remained.
