Chapter 5 - THE CUSTODY FILE

The custody file contained photographs of Khloe crying.

In a parking lot after a fertility appointment.

Inside her car after the second miscarriage.

On the bathroom floor of the Lower Merion estate.

Khloe stared at the images.

“Who took these?”

Harrison’s expression became hard.

“The house cameras.”

“Richard saved private footage.”

One photograph showed Khloe holding a towel over her mouth as she sobbed.

She remembered that night.

Richard had told her he needed sleep before a meeting.

She went to the guest bathroom so he would not hear her.

He had later extracted the image from the security system.

Under the photograph, someone had written:

Evidence of emotional instability.

Khloe pressed one hand against her chest.

“He watched me break.”

“And saved it for court.”

Harrison closed the file.

“He will never use this against you successfully.”

“That does not change what he did.”

“No.”

“It doesn’t.”

The draft petition requested emergency custody immediately after delivery.

It described Richard as the stable parent.

Vanessa’s name appeared as a proposed childcare consultant.

The woman who mocked Khloe’s miscarriages planned to help raise her daughter.

Mara traced the document to Richard’s private attorney, Daniel Price.

Price had filed aggressive custody cases for wealthy executives.

He specialized in portraying mothers as unstable.

Harrison knew him.

They had faced each other twice.

Price had lost both times.

“He will claim he was preparing options,” Harrison said.

“Preparation reveals intent.”

Khloe looked toward the baby monitor attached to her abdomen.

The doctor had ordered daily checks because stress raised her blood pressure.

“What if Richard comes after us?”

“He will.”

“You say that very calmly.”

“I prefer predictable enemies.”

Harrison filed a protective custody notice before the baby was born.

The notice did not decide custody.

It prevented Richard from removing the child from the hospital without court permission.

Richard’s attorneys responded by accusing Harrison of abusing his influence.

The judge scheduled a preliminary hearing.

Richard arrived in a dark suit.

Vanessa sat three rows behind him.

She wore a loose black coat despite the warm courtroom.

Khloe noticed the shape beneath it.

Vanessa was visibly pregnant now.

Reporters gathered outside.

The hearing lasted two hours.

Richard’s attorney argued Khloe had weaponized her brother.

Harrison presented the forged mortgage documents.

The judge asked Richard whether he signed Khloe’s name.

Richard said:

“I believed I had spousal authorization.”

Khloe stared at him.

The judge did not.

“Belief is not a signature.”

The court extended the financial freeze.

It also ordered Richard not to contact Khloe except through counsel.

As they left, Vanessa approached the courthouse restroom.

Khloe was washing her hands.

For one moment, they were alone.

Vanessa stood behind her.

“You think Harrison can protect you forever?”

Khloe looked at her reflection.

“No.”

“I think evidence can protect me long enough to tell the truth.”

Vanessa placed one hand on her stomach.

“When my son is born, Richard will choose us.”

May you like

Khloe turned.

“If Richard were capable of choosing anyone but himself, neither of us would be standing here.”
