Chapter 9 — The Night Claire Disappeared

For fifteen years, Claire had carried the same nightmare.

A dark road.

A broken car.

The smell of smoke.

And a woman's hand reaching out through the flames.

She had spent years convincing herself it wasn't her fault.

That she had done everything she could.

That she had saved someone.

But Daniel Cross had just opened the door to the one memory she had buried forever.

Your mother's blood was on her hands.

Alex stared at his wife.

Not with hatred.

Not with anger.

With confusion.

A painful kind of confusion.

"Claire."

His voice was quiet.

"Tell me he's lying."

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

That silence hurt more than any answer.

Daniel watched them carefully.

He enjoyed seeing the damage he created.

"She can't."

Alex turned toward him.

"Why?"

Daniel smiled.

"Because the truth is complicated."

"Then explain."

Daniel walked toward the fireplace.

"Fifteen years ago, I was supposed to disappear."

Richard stepped forward.

"Enough."

Daniel laughed.

"Still protecting your family, Richard?"

"You destroyed enough lives."

Daniel looked at him.

"No."

His eyes moved toward Claire.

"Your family destroyed hers first."

Claire closed her eyes.

"Stop."

Daniel looked at her.

"Tell him."

She shook her head.

"Daniel."

"Tell him how you found Elizabeth Ashford that night."

Alex froze.

His mother's name.

Daniel continued.

"Tell him how she was dying."

Claire's breathing became uneven.

"Tell him how she gave you the diary."

Alex looked at Claire.

"Is this true?"

A tear fell down her face.

"Yes."

The room became silent.

"But that's not what happened."

Alex waited.

Claire looked at Richard.

Then back at Alex.

"Your mother found me after Daniel attacked me."

Daniel's expression changed slightly.

"Claire."

"No."

Her voice became stronger.

"For fifteen years, I protected your secret."

Everyone looked at Daniel.

Claire continued.

"You didn't disappear because of the accident."

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"You disappeared because Elizabeth Ashford discovered what you did."

Alex stared at Daniel.

"What did he do?"

Claire's hands shook.

"He killed someone."

The room went silent.

Daniel laughed.

A cold, empty laugh.

"You still believe that?"

Claire looked at him.

"Because I saw it."

Fifteen years earlier.

Claire remembered every second.

Daniel had taken her to an abandoned warehouse.

He wanted the diary.

The diary containing copies of financial records.

Names.

Payments.

Evidence.

When Claire refused, Daniel became someone she didn't recognize.

The man she loved disappeared.

A stranger stood in his place.

She escaped.

But not before Daniel followed her.

That was when Elizabeth Ashford found her.

Elizabeth had been investigating her own family.

She knew the truth.

She knew Daniel was dangerous.

And she knew Claire was the only person who could expose him.

But before they could reach the police...

Their car was forced off the road.

Elizabeth was badly injured.

Claire tried to save her.

She held Elizabeth's hand.

She promised help was coming.

But Elizabeth knew she wouldn't survive.

So she gave Claire the diary.

And whispered:

"Protect my son."

Those were her final words.

Back in the library, Alex could barely breathe.

"My mother knew you?"

Claire nodded.

"She saved my life."

Richard looked down.

"She saved all of us."

Alex looked at his father.

"And you knew?"

Richard closed his eyes.

"I knew Claire was telling the truth."

"Then why did you let her hide?"

Richard looked ashamed.

"Because Daniel threatened everyone."

Daniel interrupted.

"Because Richard made a deal."

Everyone turned.

Alex looked at Daniel.

"What deal?"

Daniel smiled.

"The deal that allowed me to disappear."

Richard's face turned pale.

Alex stepped toward his father.

"What deal?"

Richard remained silent.

Daniel answered for him.

"He gave me everything I needed."

A pause.

"In exchange for keeping one secret."

Alex's voice lowered.

"Which was?"

Daniel looked at Claire.

Then smiled.

"That Elizabeth Ashford's death wasn't caused by me alone."

The room went cold.

"Someone else was there."

Alex looked at Claire.

"Who?"

May you like

Daniel pointed.

At Richard.
