Chapter 2 — The Secret Behind the Uniform

The mansion had never been so quiet.
An hour earlier, the Ashford Estate was filled with music, champagne, and laughter.
Now every guest stood frozen.
Nobody knew what to say.
Victoria Hale was the first person to recover.
She forced a laugh.
"Alex, this is some kind of joke, right?"
Alex stared at her.
"No."
Victoria's face changed.
"But she works here."
Claire slowly stood.
Alex immediately supported her.
The guests noticed something strange.
The billionaire CEO wasn't treating Claire like a hidden embarrassment.
He treated her like the most important person in the world.
Victoria looked at Claire.
"You lied."
Claire remained silent.
"I asked you about your husband months ago."
"I answered honestly."
Victoria frowned.
"You said your husband worked in business."
Claire looked at Alex.
"And he does."
A few guests exchanged confused expressions.
Victoria shook her head.
"This is ridiculous."
Then she looked at Alex.
"You married a servant and hid her from everyone?"
Alex's eyes became cold.
"No."
He stepped forward.
"I married the woman who saved my life."
The room went silent.
Nobody knew that story.
Not even Victoria.
Six years ago, before Alex became one of the richest men in America, he was involved in a serious accident.
His car crashed during a storm.
Everyone assumed he was dead.
But a stranger found him.
A young nurse named Claire Bennett.
She stayed with him for fourteen hours until help arrived.
She never asked for money.
Never asked for recognition.
She only asked one question.
"Are you going to be okay?"
That was the moment Alex fell in love.
But after their secret wedding, Claire made one request.
She wanted a normal life.
Not luxury.
Not attention.
Not people pretending to care because of his wealth.
So Alex agreed.
For six years, Claire lived quietly.
Working inside the mansion.
Watching the world judge her.
Because she wanted to know who loved her husband...
And who only loved his money.
Tonight, Victoria had given her the answer.
Alex looked at the guests.
"Every person in this room knew Claire worked here."
He paused.
"But not one person stopped what happened."
Nobody spoke.
The shame was obvious.
Then an older man stepped forward.
Richard Ashford.
Alex's father.
The founder of Ashford International.
His expression was unreadable.
"Alexander."
Alex looked at him.
"You knew?"
Richard didn't answer immediately.
That silence was enough.
Claire noticed.
And her heart sank.
"Richard knew?"
Alex turned.
His father's eyes moved away.
For the first time that night, Alex looked surprised.
Because his father knew Claire was his wife.
And he allowed this humiliation to happen.
"Why?" Alex asked.
Richard remained silent.
Then he said something nobody expected.
"Because I needed to know if she was strong enough."
Claire froze.
"What?"
Richard looked at her.
"The Ashford family has enemies."
The room became colder.
"This was never about the wine."
Alex's expression changed.
"What are you talking about?"
Richard looked toward Claire.
"Someone inside this house has been trying to destroy our family."
A nervous silence followed.

Then Richard said:
"And tonight, they made their first mistake."
