Chapter 4 — The Woman Who Was Supposed To Be Dead

The silence after Claire's words felt heavier than anything anyone had said that night.

Alex stared at his wife.

"My past."

Those two words repeated inside his mind.

For six years, he believed he knew everything about Claire Bennett.

He knew how she took her coffee.

He knew she cried during old movies but pretended she didn't.

He knew she hated expensive gifts and preferred handwritten notes.

He knew she was gentle, patient, and impossibly strong.

But he didn't know this.

He didn't know there was a part of her life she had buried so deeply that someone was now using it against her.

"Claire."

His voice softened.

"Who is dead?"

She didn't answer.

Instead, she walked toward the window overlooking the dark gardens.

The woman who had faced Victoria Hale without fighting back now looked terrified.

"Before I met you," she whispered, "I was someone else."

Alex frowned.

"Everyone has a past."

"Not like mine."

Richard remained silent in the corner.

Alex noticed.

His father's silence was almost worse than the mystery.

"You knew."

Richard looked away.

"You knew something about Claire."

"I knew pieces."

"Pieces?"

Alex's voice became colder.

"You let me marry a woman while hiding information from me?"

Richard looked at him.

"You think I didn't want to tell you?"

"Then why didn't you?"

Richard walked closer.

"Because your mother made me promise."

The room froze.

Alex's expression changed.

His mother had died ten years earlier.

But her name still carried pain inside the Ashford family.

"What does my mother have to do with Claire?"

Richard looked at the photograph.

"Everything."

Claire closed her eyes.

She had hoped this moment would never come.

But secrets did not disappear.

They waited.

They grew.

And eventually, they demanded to be heard.

Fifteen years earlier.

Before the Ashford empire.

Before wealth.

Before Alex became a billionaire.

Claire Bennett was known as Claire Morgan.

She was twenty-two years old.

A medical student.

Brilliant.

Ambitious.

And deeply in love with a man named Daniel Cross.

Daniel was charming.

Intelligent.

And dangerous.

At first, Claire believed he was perfect.

Until she discovered what he was hiding.

Daniel wasn't just a businessman.

He was connected to a financial organization involved in illegal activities.

When Claire discovered evidence proving it, she tried to report him.

That was when her life changed forever.

Daniel disappeared.

And Claire was told he died in a car explosion.

Everyone believed it.

Including her.

Until one month later, someone sent her a message.

A single sentence.

"Dead men don't send warnings."

Claire spent years looking over her shoulder.

She changed her name.

Moved cities.

Started over.

Then she met Alex.

And for the first time, she felt safe.

Until tonight.

Until someone brought back the past she had escaped.

Back in the study, Alex looked at Claire.

"Daniel Cross."

The name meant something.

He had heard it before.

A businessman who vanished after one of the biggest financial scandals in the country.

"He's alive?"

Claire nodded slowly.

"I think so."

Richard stepped forward.

"Not only alive."

He opened another file.

"He has been working against Ashford International for years."

Alex looked through the documents.

Bank records.

Company transfers.

Hidden accounts.

Then he saw something that made his face lose color.

A signature.

Daniel Cross.

And underneath it—

A photograph.

Of Claire.

Taken recently.

Outside the Ashford Estate.

Someone had been watching her.

Alex clenched his fist.

"He was here."

Richard nodded.

"Yes."

"When?"

Richard hesitated.

"Three months ago."

Alex looked up sharply.

"And you didn't tell me?"

Richard didn't respond.

That was his answer.

The betrayal cut deeper than expected.

Claire moved toward Alex.

"Alex..."

But he stepped back.

Not from her.

From everything.

His family.

His father.

The secrets surrounding his wife.

The entire life he thought he understood.

Then the study lights suddenly flickered.

Everyone turned.

The security system alarm started.

A guard's voice came through the speaker.

"Mr. Ashford..."

A pause.

Then fear.

"Someone broke into the east wing."

Alex immediately moved.

"Who?"

The guard swallowed.

"We don't know."

A second later, another voice came through the speaker.

A voice everyone recognized.

Victoria Hale.

But she wasn't screaming.

She was crying.

"Alex..."

The sound of her breathing shook.

"Please help me."

Alex froze.

Because Victoria whispered the words nobody expected.

"Daniel Cross has Claire's old diary."

Claire's face went completely pale.

"My diary?"

Victoria's voice trembled.

May you like

"And he knows the one secret you never told Alex."

The connection cut.
