Chapter 3 — The Message Hidden in the Scissors

Police arrived before midnight.
Not because Claire wanted revenge.
Because Alex demanded answers.
The guests had left.
Victoria was gone.
But the evidence remained.
The torn hair.
The broken bracelet.
The security footage.
And something nobody noticed.
The scissors.
Claire sat in the private study while doctors checked her.
The baby was safe.
But Alex refused to leave her side.
"You should have told me."
Claire looked down.
"I promised."
"Promised what?"
She hesitated.
"That I wouldn't reveal who you were unless I had to."
Alex sighed.
"You shouldn't have been protecting me."
Claire looked at him.
"I wasn't protecting you."
A pause.
"I was protecting myself."
That answer hurt him.
Because he realized something.
For six years, Claire had lived among people who saw her as invisible.
And she had done it alone.
Suddenly, the study door opened.
Richard entered.
Alex immediately stood.
"Explain."
Richard looked tired.
"There is something you both need to know."
He placed an old envelope on the desk.
Claire recognized it.
Her face changed.
"Where did you get that?"
Richard looked at her.
"It was hidden inside the scissors Victoria used tonight."
Alex picked up the envelope.
His expression darkened.
Inside was a single photograph.
A photograph of Claire.
But it was taken fifteen years ago.
Before she met Alex.
Before she worked at the mansion.
Before anyone knew her.
On the back of the photograph were five words:
"She knows the truth."
Alex looked at Claire.
"What truth?"
Claire didn't answer.
Because for the first time in six years...
She looked afraid.
Then her phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered.
A distorted voice whispered:
"Congratulations, Claire."
Her blood froze.
"You finally showed him who you really are."
The call ended.
Alex grabbed her hand.
"Who was that?"
Claire stared at the photograph.
Then quietly said:
"My past."

A long silence followed.
"And someone who was supposed to be dead."
