Chapter 1 — The Woman Everyone Humiliated

The sound of scissors cutting through hair echoed across the grand marble foyer.

One sharp snip.

Then another.

The guests froze.

Nobody laughed anymore.

Nobody whispered.

They simply watched.

On the floor beneath the massive crystal chandelier, a pregnant woman in a simple gray maid uniform sat trembling with her hands covering her head.

Her name was Claire Bennett.

For six years, Claire had worked inside the Ashford Estate.

She cleaned rooms no one entered.

Prepared meals she rarely tasted.

And cared for a family that never learned her name.

Until tonight.

Tonight, she had become entertainment.

Standing above her was Victoria Hale, the elegant blonde fiancée of the Ashford family’s eldest son.

Victoria held a handful of Claire’s freshly cut hair in one hand.

In the other was a pair of silver scissors.

Her diamond bracelet sparkled beneath the lights.

"Staff who embarrass me do not belong here," Victoria said coldly.

Her voice carried through the entire room.

Claire looked up with tears in her eyes.

"I didn't do anything wrong..."

Victoria smiled.

That smile made several guests uncomfortable.

"You spilled wine on my dress."

"I apologized," Claire whispered.

"You apologized after ruining a fifty-thousand-dollar gown."

"It was an accident."

Victoria stepped closer.

"Accidents happen when people like you forget their place."

The guests looked away.

Some felt uncomfortable.

Others remained silent.

Because Victoria Hale was powerful.

Her father owned one of the largest investment companies in the city.

And soon, she would become part of the Ashford family.

Nobody wanted to challenge her.

Nobody except one person.

A young woman named Claire.

"Please..." Claire touched her stomach.

"I'm pregnant."

The room became even quieter.

Victoria looked down.

Then laughed softly.

"That is supposed to make me feel sorry?"

Claire's face turned pale.

"My husband—"

"You mean the gardener?"

Victoria interrupted.

The guests exchanged uncomfortable looks.

Claire lowered her eyes.

She never talked about her husband.

Not because she was ashamed.

Because she promised him she would protect his privacy.

Victoria raised the scissors again.

"Maybe next time you'll remember your position."

Then—

The mansion doors opened.

Everyone turned.

A man walked into the foyer.

Tall.

Calm.

Dangerously quiet.

He wore a perfectly tailored black three-piece suit.

His expression showed no anger.

No panic.

Only controlled disappointment.

The entire room changed the moment he appeared.

Because everyone knew him.

Alexander Ashford.

The billionaire owner of Ashford International.

The man newspapers called ruthless.

The man who had built an empire before thirty-five.

The man who rarely showed emotion.

He walked past the guests.

Past Victoria.

Straight toward the woman on the floor.

Claire looked up.

And her tears immediately returned.

"Alex..."

The guests gasped.

Victoria's smile disappeared.

Alex removed his expensive overcoat.

Then gently placed it around Claire's shoulders.

Covering her torn uniform.

Protecting her.

He knelt beside her.

His hand touched her face.

"Are you hurt?"

Claire shook her head.

But she couldn't stop crying.

Alex slowly stood.

Then he looked at Victoria.

His voice was calm.

Almost too calm.

"Why is my wife on the floor?"

Silence.

Complete silence.

Victoria stared at him.

"No..."

She stepped backward.

"That's impossible."

Alex's eyes narrowed.

"Excuse me?"

Victoria looked around.

Searching for support.

"You never said your wife was the maid."

Alex's expression hardened.

"Because my marriage is not your business."

A whisper moved through the crowd.

The maid?

The billionaire's wife?

Nobody knew.

Nobody expected.

Claire Bennett—the quiet woman everyone ignored—was actually the woman who owned half of the Ashford fortune.

But that was not the biggest secret in the room.

May you like

Because Claire knew something Alex didn't.

Something that could destroy his entire family.
